S.A.G.S. League Begins Third Season

The third season of the S.A.G.S. Basketball League has officially begun, as teams started holding practices, kicked off as usual by the combined scrimmage in which players from all five teams get the chance to compete in 1-on-1, 3-on-3, and 5-on-5 games, skills competitions including a dunk contest and three-point contest, and introductions of the full rosters and coaching staffs of each team.

The dunk contest featured one player from each team. Aaron Hart of the Flyers and CJ Ross of the All-Stars were quickly eliminated as their dunks received low scores in the first two rounds. Gunners swingman Marquis Harden failed to save his best for last and was eliminated after the third round; his first-round score of 21 topped his other scores of 18 and 16. After that, it was down to two contestants: Sharpshooters sophomore Hunter Johnson and Slammers junior Will Green. Johnson had dazzled with high scores of 25 and 26, but Green had also scored 26 in the third round. The 7-foot Johnson and 5-foot-8 Green stood next to each other for a quick photo op before the final round in which only one dunk would matter. Johnson went first, succeeding on his third attempt; he lobbed the ball off the ground to himself, then quickly spread his arms and legs before throwing down a big hammer dunk. The judges were not impressed, though, as he received a score of 19. Green brought out a prop, a small stepladder, and climbed two stairs up. Putting backspin on the ball to slow its descent, Green tossed the ball into the air, leapt off the stairs, caught the ball, and threw down a windmill dunk—“I decided in a split-second to do the windmill because I knew I could pull it off,” said Green after the fact—for a score of 22 and the dunk contest trophy.

The three-point contest also featured one player per team. Each player had two minutes to attempt no more than five shots at each of five spots around the arc, getting their own rebound after each shot. After they finished shooting, players then had to “clock in” back in the right corner, where each player started. The fifth shot at each spot was given the moniker of the “money ball” and awarded two points rather than the usual one. All-Stars senior guard Ryan Simmons made 11 of 25 shots including 3 money balls and clocked in with 15 seconds remaining. Flyers forward Jon Sampson made 9 of 25, three money balls and finished with just one second on the clock. Gunners junior and three-point specialist D.J. Smith made 16 of 24 shots, but could not attempt his final shot; he made two money ball shots. Sharpshooters senior guard Quan Morgan then made 12 of 25 shots, including two money balls, and finished with an incredible 24 seconds left on the clock. But yet again, it was Will Green taking the spotlight; he rode a hot streak at the two wings and the top of the key, making 16 of 25 shots, including three money balls, and finishing with 21 seconds remaining.

The 1-on-1, 3-on-3, and 5-on-5 games were informal, and featured players from different teams mixing and matching including a team comprised of all walk-on players (players who do not receive athletic scholarships) and a 3-on-3 team containing the three Joseph brothers (Matt, Cody, and Landon), all of whom now play for the Gunners. Since no scores were kept, there were no official winners and no trophies or awards were given.

Stay tuned for previews of all five teams, including full rosters, coaching information, and tons of other facts, figures and analysis! We will also be taking time to look at some of the league’s history, including some big individual performances and full results of the first two seasons!

[An overview of what'll be happening over the next few days/weeks/months/however long this lasts: I’ll first be doing the team previews and the league history, and from there I’ll start Season 3, with detailed recaps of each game and league news in-between games, along with some storylines, recruiting updates, and so on. My goal with this is to make you, the readers, feel as though you were part of a whole new world of college basketball, all while getting some good practice writing and some exercise (I play every game while keeping full stats simultaneously!). I hope you follow and enjoy, and feel free to get involved! Comment on what you’d like to see more or less of, where you think X recruit would fit best, what you think of the log in general, anything! Enjoy!]

Team Preview: All-Stars

Head Coach: Robby Stewart (3rd season, 9-5, 2 championships)

Departures: SF Joe McMillan (8.3 PPG, 7 starts) - graduation
Arrivals: PF Mike Allen (****, Scoring), F Harrison Edwards (**, All-Around), walk-on F Kevin McElroy

After another championship-winning season, Robby Stewart is ready to lead the All-Stars to another strong finish, and they look poised to do so, especially if freshman forwards Mike Allen and Harrison Edwards can gel quickly with a returning core. Key returnees include junior centers Ben Aldridge (2nd in MVP voting) and Doug Tanner (Sixth Man award winner) and senior guard Brandon Fitzgerald (Season 1 Defensive POTY). Look for Stewart to use substitutions to keep his best players fresh down the stretch, but don’t be surprised if his lineups vary for any reason.

Bold - Projected Starter, Italic - Newcomer

C Ben Aldridge (JR, 7’, 240) — The native Australian was limited to four games in his first year due to a knee injury, but rebounded strongly, appearing in all eight games last season and averaging 15.3 points and 6.3 rebounds. After shedding twenty pounds in the offseason to become even more agile and explosive, Aldridge will remain the starting center.

PF Mike Allen (FR, 6’10”, 230) — The freshman scored 16 points in the league’s annual recruit showcase, but he will have to take on a greatly reduced role with some very talented players surrounding him. Allen is likely to start for the team, and one rival coach said he envisions the kid as “sort of a Steven Hammel type”, referencing the former All-Star who was a triple threat in terms of scoring, rebounding and passing.

SG CJ Ross (SO, 6’4”, 195) — After averaging 12.6 points his freshman year, Ross will look to improve in other areas of his game. A jaw-dropping athlete, Ross already throws down ferocious dunks, but will need to control himself and use that length in other ways to truly become a star.

SG Brandon Fitzgerald (SR, 6’4”, 200) — It seems impossible that Fitzgerald is about to end his great career, but that’s exactly what lies ahead for the all-around wing. Fitzgerald was named the Defensive Player of the Year in Season 1, averaging 2.5 steals per contest, but his numbers were down across the board last year as he became more of a scorer for the team. Look for him to rebound as the scoring will be more spread out for this year’s team.

G Jay House (SR, 6’3”, 195) — The dynamic House scored 14.5 PPG as a sophomore but his numbers took a dip last year as he dropped to 10.4 PPG along with his rebounding and assist totals dropping. He missed three games with a concussion but is believed to be back at full strength now. He will again start at the point but has a bit more of a scorer’s mentality than might be preferred.

C Doug Tanner (JR, 6’11”, 245) — A strong inside presence, Tanner has started five games over two seasons for the All-Stars, proving to be equally as effective coming off the bench as he is when starting. He averaged 8.8 points and 6 rebounds as a freshman and 6.9 points and 6.8 rebounds as a sophomore.

G Ryan Simmons (SR, 6’2”, 175) — A fan favorite and a former walk-on, Simmons has improved dramatically since he first stepped onto campus as a skinny freshman. He joined the basketball team and was the last man off the bench (head coach Robby Stewart rewards all walk-ons with scholarships their second year and beyond) as a sophomore, but he kept at it and averaged 6.5 PPG and 2.3 APG last year. Simmons wants to play overseas in the future, but for now he will look to step up and become a key bench cog for coach Stewart. The senior put on some muscle this offseason, gaining ten pounds over the long winter.

G Mark Cox (JR, 6’1”, 180) — Another former walk-on, Cox is the only lefty on the team. A three-point specialist by nature, Cox shot 22 percent as a freshman and 24 percent as a sophomore. He needs to step up his game if he wants to keep his spot in the rotation.

F Randy Connors (JR, 6’8”, 225) — The former walk-on has become a leader for this year’s squad, with modest averages of 3.3 points and 1.6 rebounds undershadowing the energy and hustle he brings every time he steps onto the court. Connors will be an invaluable part of the All-Stars’ frontcourt serving as depth behind Aldridge, Allen and Tanner.

F Harrison Edwards (FR, 6’7”, 190) — The lanky freshman will also serve as depth for the All-Stars. Edwards is listed as a forward but possesses adequate enough ball-handling skills to also play some guard if necessary. He is likely to join Mark Cox and Randy Connors in backing up the 3 and the 4 positions.

PG Colin Weaver (SO, 5’9”, 165) — A skilled ball-handler, the smaller but older half of the Weaver twins will be the third-string point guard behind Jay House and Ryan Simmons. He could, however, see some action off the bench if coach Robby Stewart feels they need a spark of energy or if he wants to play House or Simmons off the ball. Weaver can occasionally shoot from deep, but prefers to pass the ball to his teammates.

G Austin Weaver (SO, 6’1”, 180) — The bigger but younger half of the Weaver twins is merely depth behind other depth. Like his brother, he is most likely to see action late in blowouts or if the team needs a quick burst of energy. Both Weaver brothers are always ready to go after loose balls and get some floorburns.

F Kevin McElroy (FR, 6’9”, 220) — McElroy is the team’s only walk-on this season and is unlikely to see much of the floor this season. He could eventually become a floor-spacing big man, but at this point is nothing more than a tall guy with an okay shot.

Good question. I play every game using a mini hoop attached to my closet door and an off-brand Nerf basketball. It's kinda hard to explain how it all works but basically the gist of it is that I basically play out the entire game (coaching decisions, offense, defense) and keep stats in my scorebook at the same time. And yes, I do occasionally block my own shots.

It would probably be a lot easier if I had more space in my room, but for now the "court" is restricted my the presence of my bookcase, dresser, desk and bed. There's the occasional biased decision (ex. wanting player X to get a steal so making a bad pass towards them, or player Y is shooting too well so intentionally missing a shot) but a lot of it is just me playing around and having fun and seeing what happens. I've even come up with a few strategies before while playing these games (probably forgot all of them within 48 hours lol) so it's getting exercise for my brain and my body

Twenty-eight players. Two teams. One game.

The S.A.G.S. Basketball League officially opened play with a spectacular game between the Slammers and the All-Stars. The contest went to overtime, but the Slammers pulled out the win by the score of 90-86. All-Stars forward Joe McMillan had 24 points and eight rebounds, but it wasn’t enough. “We played hard, played a good game, but they have a deep bench and their depth just got to us, I think,” the junior said. All fifteen players scored for the Slammers, with just one in double figures: junior two-guard Zack Rogers, who had twenty points on a perfect 9-for-9 shooting night. “We just came into this game pumped up, but once we started to control that energy, we got a nice rhythm going,” said junior forward Chris Marshall, who finished with six points and five boards.

The All-Stars will stay home against the Sharpshooters for their next game, while the Slammers play the Gunners next.

heh it's quite fun and you don't have to worry about weather

fun fact: I once broke a hoop by throwing a 10 lb. medicine ball at it. I also used to have an old flimsy hoop that got snapped in half somehow (like I didn't deliberately snap it in half, just dunked too hard or something) but whatever. one of my mini basketballs is deflated too. and another nerf one started shedding all over my carpet. #firstworldproblems

The All-Stars took home the inaugural S.A.G.S. Basketball League trophy, as they won a thrilling overtime game against the Gunners in Game 3 of the league’s championship round. Having split the previous two games, the teams went in with a win-or-die attitude.

Incredible performances were turned in by All-Stars point guard Adam Crosby, who logged eighteen points, five rebounds, and sixteen assists, Gunners point guard Tim Kennedy with 43 points and seven three-pointers, and Gunners backup center Collin Barnes, who came in averaging 2.3 points and 3.2 rebounds but scored 22 to go with ten rebounds.

The game-winning three-pointer, however, was made by walk-on freshman Mark Cox, who finished with seven points despite not playing until the fourth quarter. “I just stepped in and shot the ball, and it went in…[Jay] House was over here on the bench with his jaw dropping. Like, [expletive]…”

Both teams will return home until practices begin in late November. The season opener is December 23rd.

oops

Team Preview: Flyers

Head Coach: Donald Hart (2nd season, 1-7)

Departures: F J.J. Jennings (8 starts, 5.6 PPG, 4.6 RPG) - graduation
Arrivals: SG Bradley George (**, Defense), walk-on PG Tim Young, walk-on PF Ashton Free

The Flyers were a complete disappointment last season, only winning one game: their final game of the season, which happened to be the Senior Night for starting forward J.J. Jennings, their only departure from last year’s team. Head coach Donald Hart will need to get the players all on the same page this season if he wants to keep his job; sophomore guards Ryan Jacobs and Calvin Miller will play big roles in determining whether or not this season is a good one for the team. The Flyers are unique in that they did not join the S.A.G.S. League until Season 2, but they are viewed as being a very strong academic institution that may be a perennial cellar-dweller unless this group of sophomores steps up and turns them into a legitimate contender.

Bold - Projected Starter, Italic - Newcomer

C Luis Pena (SO, 6’10”, 255) — Pena was a walk-on last year and still averaged 2.4 points and 2.9 rebounds per game, earning the Top Walk-On award. This season, the native Colombian will be asked to be a physical presence in the paint. A strong rebounder, Pena will have less opportunities to score as the players around him grow into their roles, but he will still have a role as a rebounder and a hard fouler.

PF Jon Sampson (SO, 6’10”, 240) — After making six starts, averaging 8.9 PPG, and shooting 29 percent from three last year, Sampson will be looked to as a stretch-four or even a stretch-five this season. He is likely to receive the most minutes behind Pena at the 5 in addition to starting at the 4 this year.

G/F Antwan Long (SO, 6’4”, 195) — Long is a very stout defender who posted modest averages of 3.5 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game last season. His impact on the game is often not quantifiable, as his defense is his calling card, but he is a threat to score if left open.

SG Ryan Jacobs (SO, 6’3”, 185) — Jacobs was the star last season, scoring 15.3 PPG and shooting 44% from deep, but he will be part of a more balanced attack this season. Jacobs is a playmaker who consistently finds new and creative ways to score, and also plays solid defense.

PG Calvin Miller (SO, 6’1”, 185) — Rounding out the Flyers’ all-sophomore starting five is point guard Calvin Miller. He averaged 15.4 points per game while shooting 47 percent on three-pointers, and he may take on an increased scoring load after an offseason of hard work and training. Miller is an explosive athlete who can score at the rim, but he likes to shoot threes as well.

PG Mickey Hart (SR, 6’, 170) — The oldest son of coach Donald Hart is a self-designated three-point specialist. After a rough sophomore year with the Slammers, he transferred to play for his dad, and averaged 8.5 points and 1.4 assists per game while shooting 40% from deep. He will be the first man off the bench for the Flyers this season.

SG Aaron Hart (JR, 6’3”, 185) — Mickey’s younger brother is a high-jumper for the track team and a good athlete, but he often struggles to translate his athleticism to the basketball court. He is often too eager to shoot the three instead of taking it to the hole, but upped his scoring average from 3.7 to 5.1 points per contest last season, and will try to continue that trajectory this season.

SG Bradley George (FR, 6’3”, 190) — George is the team’s highest-ranked recruit coming in…and he is only given a two-star (out of five) rating by most scouting services. However, the coach of his high school’s biggest rival says that he thinks the young, athletic wing could become great…under the right coaching staff. It is yet to be seen whether George will be a fit in coach Hart’s system.

F Bob Davis (JR, 6’6”, 200) — Davis, a former walk-on, will probably not play too much of a role this season despite receiving a scholarship, although coach Donald Hart is a firm advocate of getting every one of his players into games as often as possible. He turned down a scholarship from the All-Stars after his freshman year to come play for the Flyers, but it remains uncertain whether he will have any impact during his time here.

F Brad Jones (SO, 6’7”, 220) — Jones is a walk-on forward who prefers to spend his time on the court shooting from deep, limiting his impact on the game barring a made shot. He made just 2 of 10 from three last season.

PG Tim Young (FR, 5’10”, 170) — Young is a talented, but inconsistent point guard who can pass, rebound and score…sometimes. A walk-on, Young was rated a two-star prospect by a couple of services, but turned down offers from the All-Stars and Gunners to come to the Flyers. He is rumored to already be considering a transfer after the season.

PF Ashton Free (FR, 6’9”, 225) — Free is a decent defender, but is not willing enough to get physical on either end to be much of anything at this stage in his career. He has four years to figure it out, however.
