I've never seen the coaching system before. What do the Analysis and Teaching ratings affect?

Also, everyone on your team is either really young or really old

Thanks, Zumi. Trying to make it detailed enough for a good read.

According to powerprotranslation, players improve faster with higher Training ability, whereas coaches can see a player type (ex. early/late bloomer) easier with higher Analyzing ability. They consider Training more important.

yes, this is an issue worth monitoring haha. It's worrisome when the best hitters and the ace are mid-late 30s, heh. We're gonna consider a certain approach should the veterans struggle. Glad you mentioned it as I'm working on a trade offer right now that I will post about later!

Pitcher info comes first.

Baystars Pitching

ImageImageImage

SP Daisuke Miura 39 y/o (20 yrs pro)
90 MPH/B/B, SHUT(2)/HSLD(3)/FORK(2)
W/RISP4 Fat Pitch ChangingSpeedO PatientHtr
Gd Pace Team Killer (Hanshin) CGPitcher
Miura-sama, the Hama no Bancho, will be the eesu of the staff at a ripe 40 years of age. He'll likely hit 3000 innings in his career by the fall, and serves as one of the more durable and reliable starters in the league. His dedication to Yokohama has lasted throughout all the iterations of the BayStars for over 20 seasons. The other Dice-K eats innings, utilizes an eephus, and has become known for being a Hanshin killer, often beating the squad he grew up admiring at their own Koshien Stadium. Again, the longevity of a guy like Miura will come into question, especially since he's our #1 starter.

SP Kota Suda 26 y/o (2 yrs pro)
90 MPH/C/C, SHUT(1)/SLD(4)/SNK(1)
W/RISP4 FBLife4 Walk SlapHtr
Condition-dependent
Waseda graduate Suda has had a tough few years since debuting in 2011. With a nice slider, dependable control & stamina, and a four-seam that moves well, he's the default #2. At 26, he should be entering his prime, so I'm looking for improvement - after all, someone will need to replace Miura as soon as 2014.

SP Shugo Fujii 35 y/o (13 yrs pro)
87 MPH/D/C, SLD(3)/CB(1)/CHG(2)
VsLefty4 Release4 Walk BrkBallP
GdPace Condition-dependent
Fujii has been around since the start of the millenium, taking the mound for the first time in April 2000 for the Swallows. His sophomore season was easily his premier, earning much zessan for a 14-8 record and 3.17 ERA. The lefty collected the most wins in the Central League, garnering the MVP award, Best Nine status, and an All-Star berth in one fell swoop. Consequently, Yakult took home the Japan Senshuken Series in 5 over the Buffaloes. He did not age well though, unable to keep his ERA under 3.25 until 2008, and has not since then. That in mind, Fujii will probably not be more than a stabilizing presence in the middle of the rotation, keeping the seat warm until a younger pitcher is ready.

SP Kazuki Mishima 22 y/o (rookie)
96 MPH/D/B, SLD(3)/VSLD(2)
Walk Fat Pitch W/RISP2 FBLife4 Dr. K
Condition-dependent PowerP
Mishima has all the tools to be our next shingari. We made him our 2nd round selection in the 2012 draft out of Hosei University. Don't let his height fool you - this 5'9" righty has high heat and strikeouts are what brought him to the dance. He has a healthy amount of stamina for his age, but if he goes long enough, problems could ensue. We'll need to get a hold of his composure to avoid the walks, mistake pitches, and not becoming concerned with runners on. I'm looking forward to the ashita, when he may very well grow into the feisu of the Baystars.

SP Kentaro Takasaki 27 y/o (6 yrs pro)
93 MPH/E/C, HSLD(3)/CHG(2)
Fat Pitch Recovery4 Consistency2
Condition-dependent SlapHtr
Takasaki, originally of Kumato Chinzei High, is erratic at best. With 6 years of experience at 27 and okay stuff, you could do worse for a back-end starter. He'll be on a short leash and will need to prove he has more to offer in the future.

SP Yuki Kuniyoshi 21 y/o (2 yrs pro)
95 MPH/E/C, FORK(2)/SLD(2)
Fat Pitch Walk Consistency2
Condition-dependent
Kuniyoshi just cracks the rotation, mostly because of necessity. He is of Shugakukan High and had a poor 4-12 win/loss last season, but the 3.67 earned run average that went with it is passable. I don't have as high hopes for him to push out the older SP, because ostensibly he looks more like Takasaki ability-wise than fellow up-and-comer Mishima. Nonetheless, I expect the 21 year-old to make the most out of this opportunity being given this early on.

RP Atori Ota 23 y/o (3 yrs pro)
91 MPH/C/D, SLD(3)/FORK(2)
W/RISP4 Slap Htr
Set-up man
Ota has only had about 70 innings of experience, the majority of those coming in an 0-7, 7.09 performance in 2011. He can only get better at 23 years of age, and since he has honed in on stopping the bleeding with runners on, he should be a trustworthy set-up guy.

RP Shinji Ohara 27 y/o (2 yrs pro)
90 MPH/C/D, SLD(3)/SHUT(2)
VsRunner2 FatPitch SlapHtr
Set-up man
Ohara was nabbed in the 5th round in 2010, and posted some very tsuyoi numbers in 2011: 4-1, 3.05 ERA, and 11 holds in 44.1 IP. He was impressive following that in 2012, dipping down to a 1.80 earned run average, albeit with a smaller workload. While you wouldn't guess it based on his attributes, he appears to be a very productive lefty for this bullpen.

RP Shigeru Kaga 27 y/o (3 yrs pro)
90 MPH/C/D, SLD(3)/HSNK(2)
W/RISP2 vsLefty2 Recovery4
Gd Delivery HidePitchO
Set-up man
The stern-faced Kaga was at the peak of his jisaku last season, racking up 45 strikeouts with a 2.86 ERA in 61 games. He had increased Ks in 2010, his debut season, but that was in 145 innings of work; his record and ERA were higher with further starts. The akutou from Jobu University is likely best used in shorter spurts where he can hide his pitches - which is one of his effective traits. We'll have to watch for matching him up with lefty batters, or bringing him in during a situation with runners in scoring position.

RP Jorge Sosa 35 y/o (11 yrs pro)
97 MPH/D/D, 2SFB(1)/SLD(4)/CHG(1)
VsRunner2 PowerP Slugger
You may be familiar with this Dominican reliever after his time in the states, bouncing around six teams and winning a ring with the Cardinals in 2006. The fiery righty from Santo Domingo and his high-90s fastball will be utilized in the late game. Outside of that and an exceptional slider, he's one-dimensional. Sosa was tremendous with Chunichi last year, which brings to question why they allowed him to reach free agency after one season. His age means chances are he is trying to contend and no doubt will be disgruntled if we're not there yet.

RP Hitoshi Fujie 27 y/o (4 yrs pro)
93 MPH/C/D, FORK(4)/SLD(1)
VsLefty2 Release2 BrkBallP
Fujie (Uenomiya Taishi HS) launched his career in 2011, putting up a 1.58 ERA in 47 games played. The right-hander born in Sakai will lean on the forkball and his 4SFB won't be breaking the radar gun. He gives off the impression that he's suited for ROOGY duties, but will overall prohibit his share of runs through reliable control.

CL Shun Yamaguchi 25 y/o (7 yrs pro)
96/E/E, SLD(3)/VSLD(2)
VsLefty4 VsRunner2 Recovery4 Walk
Dr.K Wild Control Closer SlapHtr PowerP
Yamaguchi-san is the electric closer of this who's-who kazoku that is the Baystars. He earned his first real opportunity in 2009, after having excited management with a 0.76 ERA in 16 innings the year prior. From 2010 to now, he kept that under 2.70, reaching 30 saves twice. We're anticipating results right in line with this in 2013, but hopefully additional save opportunities are in order. I've heard from some American international scouts that he's similar to Kyuji Fujikawa, who has just joined Chicago the past December. In particular, his FORK has been described as "dropping off the table" and useful against left-handed hitters. The only discrepancy to be had for him is a possible lack of control, and a small arsenal beside his fastball variations. That said, the shinjiru is there, and I'm happy to have him as the kousoku deguchi for the relief staff.

I'm not the only one who is a fan of his either (you know who you are).

The Shonan SeaRex ~ BayStars Ni-gun
Image
The SeaRex are our Eastern League minors representative. They were discontinued in 2010 after being integrated in 2000, but I'm reinstating them as the second string team. Home to Yokosuka Stadium in Kanagawa, this is the future of DeNA - for better or worse - and is to be bolstered through trades and the draft.

ImageImageImage

C Toshiki Kurobane 25 y/o (4 yrs pro)
2/G/E/D/B/D/E
Kurobane is a 2005 3rd round pick out of Nichidai Fujisawa High School, who debuted in May 2008. He drew the most work yet last year, hitting a poor .125 in 119 PAs (61 games). It appears his forte is his throwing arm and he's running out of time to improve at the plate.

3B/OF Toshiro Miyazaki 24 y/o (rookie)
3/E/D/D/E/E/E
Miyazaki was a 6th round draftee in 2012, from Kyuragi Kō. Apparently, his slogan is "All the best!". He has versatility under his belt to play the infield and outfield but is not of note elsewhere at this point.

OF Shotaro Ide 29 y/o (9 yrs pro)
3/E/D/D/D/D/E
GdSmlBall
Ide spent most of his career with the Softbank Hawks, before joining the BayStars in 2010. He played the greatest amount in 2007 - 61 games - amassing just 2 HRs and 16 RBIs in 132 at-bats. That's the same number of homers as 2012, but he needed just 11 games in comparison. I don't surmise him emerging as he nears 30 years old.

C Kenjiro Tsuruoka 25 y/o (rookie)
2/G/F/E/C/D/E
Kenjiro of Saitama Prefecture was chosen in the 8th round of the 2010 draft. He went to Kasugabekyoei High and lives by the mantra "I can't accept not trying." There's upside in his fielding, but unfortunately I can't fathom him moving up unless he polishes his hitting.

1B Taketoshi Goto 32 y/o (9 yrs pro)
3/E/C/F/F/F/F
PinchHitO
Goto stockpiled 104 RBIs throughout 9 years with the Seibu Lions. After 2011, he enlisted with Yokohama. He didn't really follow up on a 11-homer rookie season in 2003, not reaching double digits again until 2008 (.301 BA, 12 HRs). By then, the Hosei alumni settled into more of a pinch hitter role. He's always had moderate power, but is on the wrong side of 30 and stands at a small height for first base (5'9"). That could hold him back from any significant opportunities.

OF Hichori Morimoto 32 y/o (13 yrs pro)
2/E/E/C/C/B/C
Throwing4 BRun4 Durability2 SlapHtr
TeamKiller GdSmlBall DPProne CautStl
AggRun AggDef GdEye PatientHtr
Morimoto stood in the shadow of Tsuyoshi Shinjo until 2006, when his club - the Fighters - won the Japan Series, and Shinjo announced his retirement. Originally, Hokkaido picked him #4 in the 1999 entry draft. Of Korean-Japanese descent, Morimoto stands out for his distinct shaved head and flashy playstyle. He's been an All-Star and Gold Glover, landing in the tops for runs, average, and hits on several occasions. He's warranted the respect of the young boys for his fielding accumen and keeps them loose with his antics. We can value that leadership but he's not slated to be part of the 25-man roster as his career winds down.

RP Shoichi Inoh 26 y/o (rookie)
93/E/D, SLD(2)/SPLT(2)
vsLefty2 W/RISP2 Poise2
Condition-dependent
Inoh was a 2012 3rd rounder out of Jōbu daigaku. He has drawbacks to mend and is a tad old for a rookie, but might be in the plans for the rotation someday.

RP Hiroshi Kobayashi 24 y/o (1 yr pro)
90 MPH/E/C, SLD(2)/CHG(2)
Used when behind SlapHtr
Not the former pro boxer, rather the #4 overall selection in the 2010 draft (Osaka Gakuin Dai). Kobayashi says he lives without fear, and is ready to return to the majors after 19 1/3 IP in 2011. His stamina is good but he'll have to expand his repertoire slightly before getting a promotion.

RP Yota Kosugi 27 y/o (3 yrs pro)
91 MPH/E/C, SHUT(2)/SLD(2)
W/RISP4 vsLefty2 Walk
Kosugi has been with DeNA since he was drafted in 2008 (5th rd). Last year, he participated in 17 games, ending up with a 5.07 ERA over 32.1 innings. Three of those were starts, so I could eventually picture him being involved as a swing man if anything. Right now, his 91 MPH fastball and shuuto have him ticketed for the bullpen.

RP Shuichiro Osada 32 y/o (10 yrs pro)
91 MPH/C/F, SLD(2)/FORK(2)
W/RISP2 FatPitch
Osada is past the decade mark in professional years - he started with the Lions in '03. This will be his first year in the Baystars uniform. He ended his Seibu term in 2012 with a 2.53 earned run average over 53 games, before being swapped for Norihiro Watanabe. That he is on the outside looking in for the relief corps makes him a questionable fit, resoundingly in fact at his age.

RP Shoma Sato 23 y/o (4 yrs pro)
88 MPH/E/D, SHUT(2)/SLD(2)
VsRunner2 Used when behind
SlapHtr
Lefty Sato was brought in the with the 2007 crop of rookies, as our 4th rounder that draft. The diminuitive southpaw is young but his velocity is disconcerting to say the least. I would like to see him boost that and perhaps rise into a lefty specialist position.

RP Teruaki Yoshikawa 31 y/o (9 yrs pro)
91 MPH/E/C, 2SFB(1)/SHUT(2)/SLD(2)
W/RISP2 VsLefty2 VsRunner2 Release2 SlapHtr
Yoshikawa struggled out of the gate with Yokohama, from his rookie season in 2004 up to when he departed for the Hawks in 2010. When he received a healthy 37 innings (the most since his first two years) in 2011, Yoshikawa finished 14 games and amassed a 2.41 ERA. He dropped right back down to mediocrity with a 5.85 average in 2012, but we're banking on him still having something left in his arm. Those stats strike as unsightly, although it's a flyer worth taking with his experience.

And with a knock on the door, my first instance of officially reporting as GM commenced. All that dedication to studies, never yielding even when it felt futile. I thought I'd never be able to actually apply it to something, let alone of this stature. I never imagined one ram-shackled black notebook inspired this inconceivable journey. That one day, I decided I was sick of the West, my job in the states, Meja politics.. and would dare drop it all to try my hand across the world, knowing that a very select few of my kind are even granted this opportunity. I knew full-well that passing through the communication barrier is only a small obstacle, but can be so isolating in the long run, if I don't mince my words the right way. It'd be hard to do business with my fellow front office executives if they're laughing at my forced imitation of their language. Truly, who'd predict such welcoming arms for a gaijin who goes by semantics versus sabermetrics, but brings a fresh perspective all the same. I'd like to thank the academy: Danny, Tommy, my Sports Marketing class in high school, Phil, Hoshi, that business course at Keio University..

Pureo. You were to present something?

Ettoo.. (what was I going to present now, that photo for show-and-tell? Files on Jack Allen? Something about XBOX Magazine editor KANA?)

I'm afraid I can't give my input with foresight.

Right, right, definitely, I hear you, sir. (feels like I'm in the courtroom with the Judge.."Are you thinking of changing to defense? Ooh, wanna go swimming?")

Kid, listen. We don't take that kind of disrespect kindly here. I know you're new, and you think you have it all figured it out, but if you're to survive in this business, you'll have to respect your elders and let them guide you.

Ahh, gomen, gomen, Mr. Takada.

And if you plan on bringing something to your adviser, be serious and succinct. There's only so much time to prep for the opener, and management is a day-to-day operation.

Wakatta. (Not the first impression you would hope for..)

(sigh..) They hire anyone these days, eh? I win Rookie of the Year, work for pennies on the dollar salary, give for the Kyojin-gun, and all these years later I'm outclassed by a foreigner.

Sumimasen, Mr. Takada. I'm just trying to make something out of a great opportunity given by DeNA Co, and I didn't mean to offend at all. I got distracted in thinking about how I even got here, and that was my mistake. If you'll permit, I wanted to bring up this idea -

Sou desu ne.. Let's not have that happen again, or I'll have a meeting with DeNA and personally give them a piece of my mind.

... (I've made quite the error here, haven't I..)

I'm just joking with you, Pureo. God, can't you take a joke? Lighten up, you look so damn tense.

A-are?

Everything is not as it seems. That was a test - a test of your mental capacity, and your mental toughness. It appears you'd be easily swindled by the competition at this rate, if I can get in your head with such celerity.

(Yare yare..)

Mmhm, in mokuzen you could be out of here. But I like that you stood up for yourself. Believe in your abilities. That's how a veteran like myself has been around this long. It made the transition to management seamless for me, bringing that tenacious credence over from my playing days. All the kansei will be yours if you pull it together up there, and stay strong in thinking.

I stared at him intently as he lay comfortably back in his chair, hands relaxed above his head, making sure I hung on his every word and soaking up knowledge.

Yes, they must have been convinced in something about you if they promoted me to the Vice Presidency. It's a young man's game anyways.. Oh, what was it you wanted to propose, Pureo? I'm all ears.

(That was a learning experience.)

Ahem.. alright. So, before the 25-man roster and second string are set, I decided to propose a trade.

Majide! Do tell, before this old man forgets.

Well, I'd like kakutoku suru Nakamura, from Seibu.

How zurui! Okawari-kun is a great young talent. I doubt they'd be willing to just hand him to us, though.

Zettai, zettai, no doubt. We'd have to give up a lot to pry him from them, and I'm prepared to do so. Even if that means Nori is the main piece.

Shoganai. Naka-sama is a legend in Yokohama. That would be the ultimate slap in the face of the loyal fans.

I had a feeling you'd stress that, but you have to allow me to send this through if we really want to improve the team going forward. Naka-sama is sort of unfit to be our best hitter for his age, and a younger slugger would make our chances as a rebuilding team go up tenfold.

Shinjirenai. What else is to come of this?

As a matter of fact, we'd send them Ide and Osada for Nakazaki to be part of the package.

Image

Dame. That's a solid relief pitcher and outfielder going for that kid. He's barely scraped up to the Lions' roster.

Shikashi, he's got arm talent and we could afford to reinforce the ni-gun even if he doesn't make it. Ide's sitting in ni-gun right now and he's good enough to start somewhere. So, what do you say to that?

Maa nee..I suppose if you're this confident, this kyapikyapi, heh.. I can't deny you. If you really feel like this is necessary before the season even gets running, by all means.

Kini shinaide, I got it. Thanks - you won't be disappointed.

Is this what GMing feels like? All this power, passed right by Shigeru himself. I could get used to this.

Opening Day 2013

We've got Chunichi to start the season, Pureo.

(They play in the middle of Japan - the Chubu region. Also, I read they had a Nintendo game based on the team called Doala de Wii.)

They won the Japan Series in 2007 but have otherwise been unsuccessful in the playoffs. That year, they swept Hanshin after placing second in the standings, and went on to upset Yomiuri. Don't take them lightly.

We'll have to be mindful of facing Iwase, the star closer, right? Yoshimi seems quite good in his own right too.

This is true. Clark and Luna are new members from the US I'm sure you've heard of. Also keep an eye on Wada - he's 40 but has power left to give.

I think we can handle this task, Takada-san.

Give it your all, kid. It would be huge for the morale of this team if we can forge an early lead in the pennant race. The guys will be pumped to perform that way over the whole year - once they seize the taste of winning, they'll not soon forget it. The shiki for the title starts with the tamashi.

I'll get them at zen jidou, sir!

Opening Day

Yokohama Stadium
Baystars (0-0) vs Dragons (0-0)
It was a war of attrition for Game 1 of the season against Chunichi. Right off the bat, Nakamura singled in Nyjer Morgan after he had been bunted over by Aranami. They struck back with a double play groundout by Matt Clark that resulted in an RBI. Naka-sama was the focal point of the offense all match, knocking Morgan home again in the 3rd. Luna returned the favor the next half-inning, tying it at 2 apiece with Oshima crossing the plate. It was an otherwise quiet afternoon for Miura on the mound, who handed the reigns to Fujie in the 7th, after Tsutugo had pinch-hit for him. They used a sub for starter Ono and we also brought Kinjoh up to hit, but none of the bench could spark a lead. That was the case into extras as Kaga and his stone face held the fort until the 12th, when Aranami & Nakamura RBIs gave us the two-run advantage. Yamaguchi shut the door 1-2-3 in the bottom half to seal the first win of 2013.
