From the personal journal of Bernardino Esteban Lancaster
July 23rd, 2008
At the behest of my agent, Matthew, I am going to begin chronicling the events of my rookie season in the big leagues. He said that if nothing else, I'll at least be able to show it to my grandkids. I think its a way to try and keep me spending so much time golfing, but good luck with that.
A little background to start, I guess.
I was born on May 7th, 1988 in Staunton, Virginia with what my dad calls a "lightning bolt for a left arm".
I dunno, throwing a baseball really hard is just how I've always done it, don't really know how or why.
At age eighteen, I was drafted out of Robert E Lee high school by the Washington Nationals in the second round.
The minors were not all that challenging for me since I threw 98 mph with a big time curveball that my dad taught me. And I usually know where the ball is going.
Spring Training went well, and I made the big league club!
The show has not been so easy for me. Although I feel like I've been holding my own.
At first--and even now a little--I was just doing mop up work. But as skip saw how effective I could be, I started getting put into more pressure situations. Now I'm often called upon to face tough lefties and even to pick up saves when needed.
Anyway, I really like being a relief pitcher. I only have to pitch one to maybe three innings at a time, I have plenty of free time and I'm not so tired that I can't enjoy the life of a big leaguer.
Well, I guess that will do it for my first entry. Much more to come.
thanks for reading.
Bernie.

I'll try and post Lancasters password at some point.
He's pretty good already, but I'm playing on the hardest setting, so I need all the help I can get.

Authors note on rosters: This edition of Life mode is taking place in a universe where current (2016) players exist alongside players from the original rom, as well as some all time greats. For example: the heart of the Mets order is Wright, Piazza, Cespedes.

We have made some interesting trades this year.
In early July, we sent Bryce Harper to the Pirates for Andrew McCutchen.
Then, just yesterday, we traded our ace pitcher Max Scherzer to the Astros for Carlos Correa.

I'm playing well, but on the whole this is a painful rookie season.
We are an MLB worst 34-74.
We finished July 7-17, which I guess was an improvement on our 5-22 record in June.
Our current losing streak is 9 games, and the owner was in attendance for the last three.
He left in a really bad mood.

I was brought in to protect a two run lead.
But I was not at my best, command wise, Prince Fielder dinked in a Texas league two strike single. We got a terrible inning from Dimitri Young--who was playing SS!?
All this conspired to allow the Brewers to tie it up.
But Denard Span picked us up with a solo shot in the ninth and we pulled out the win.
I invited Span out for a bite afterwards.
We got to talking about ladies.
Although it was mostly him, since I'm not dating anybody.
"What about Mia?" He asked.
"Who? The sportscaster? She's kinda out of my league."
"No way man, I've seen her interview you and y'all barely talk about the game at all. She doesn't interview anyone else that way."
"Hmm", I thought, maybe I should start paying more attention.

We got swept by the Rockies at home. The owner had to sit thru three games where we did not look competitive.
Dusty Baker--who is getting more gray hair by the inning it seems--addressed the team before we hit the road for six days.
"Guys, I only got to see Miles Davis perform a few times,
but the thing that was always so apparent with him was his focus.
He didn't stray away from the present moment for one note.
That's what it takes to be the best."

Wrigley Field,
I entered a scoreless game in the 7th today, and got out of jams with runners in scoring position in both the 7th and 8th innings.
Schwarber led off the ninth, and I caught too much of the plate.
I didn't even bother watching the ball, I knew it was gone.
It was a quiet flight back to D.C. for me.
I watched a Godzilla movie.

STATS thru 8/25

D.C.
Last night I picked up a save against LA and we beat them 3-0.
Mia was interviewing players after the game, and as she headed toward me, I saw D-Span and Werth giving me thumbs up from across the clubhouse.
She asked about the game, and about to leave when I decided to take a chance and asked her to come play golf the next day. And she said yes!
She has a pretty good swing.
And really cute, too.
We grabbed some iced tea at the clubhouse afterwards and she said she had a really good time.

What a series in New York with the Mets.
In game one I came in to the 10th inning and pitched three perfect frames.
Juan Legares led off the 13th with a double just inside the left-field line, and was singled home with the next pitch, handing me the loss in a 2-1 game.

We are hitting .197 as a team, and have scored the least amount of runs in MLB.
Which is a shame because we're also leading MLB in ERA.

In game two I came on the pitch during a blowout, down six runs.
Mike Piazza blasted a well placed fastball off of the right field scoreboard.
Sometimes you just have to tip your cap to greatness.
We took the loss, 8-2.

In game three I pitched 2 scoreless innings, we rallied against Familia in the 9th, and I wound up with the victory.
Afterward I got a text from Mrs. Consiglio, the Nats owner, that was just a bunch of thumbs up emojis.

Season Recap
9/29/2008.
We finished in September as our best month of the season, going 13-11.
I earned 6 saves in September,
including a 0.96 ERA in 9.1 innings pitched over my last 5 games.
The Toughest Team I faced this year was probably the Phillies, led by Shane Victorino who went 5 for 9 with 2 homers off me.
The Easiest Team was the Marlins, who scored two runs against me over 18 innings pitched, Hanley Ramirez was their biggest goat, going 0 for 8 with 3 K's.

2008 Season Stats
2.35 ERA, 134 IP, 3 W, 7 L, 9 Sv, 7 Hld, 77 G, 91 K, 9 BB, 13 HR,
.202 BAA, 100 Hits, 8 SB, 2.90 GO/AO

I spent the month of October working on Control, and made some good progress.
For earning 9 saves this season I wound up donating $90,000 to charity, which leaves me $30K in the red. I guess I'll spend the winter doing a lot of reading, as I've amassed a pretty good library.
As for the rest of baseball, the Marlins beat the Yankees in the World Series, 4 games to 1.
Uggla was WS MVP.

Ratings as of 11/1
Top Spd 99, CTRL 156, STAM 75, ORIG CRV 7, SPLT 4, SIFB 3

Skills: Golf: D, Culture: F, all others are G.

Matthew has gone in to negotiate my contract with Mrs Consiglio, the team owner.
I'm waiting in the lobby, reading a Beginning Pitching Skills book. I breezed through it.
And my Culture skill increased to E !

Matthew walked out of the office, with Mrs Consiglio whispering in his ear.
His cheeks were flushed.
We walked down the hallway, and I asked how it went in there.
"$810K for 1 year. Sophie--uh I mean Mrs Consiglio said she was being generous, considering how many games you lost."
I side eyed Matthew, wondering if he was really the agent for me.
I decided to take the offer, since it did double my salary, and start focusing on 2009.
