The Miami Marlins: The Rebuild

Ah, the Marlins full of money...

Wait, wait, wait. This is the Marlins. Do we have money? The answer is no.

So the goal of this is simple, win games for a cheap payroll. Seems easy enough right.

Transactions before the season:
Traded 27-year-old right fielder Giancarlo Stanton to the Los Angeles Dodgers, getting 21-year-old minor league first baseman Cody Bellinger and 24-year-old minor league starting pitcher Trevor Oaks in return.
Notes: We got some prospects. And a major league-ready starter. Cody Bellinger is the 9th best prospect.

Traded 26-year-old center fielder Marcell Ozuna to the Boston Red Sox, getting 20-year-old minor league third baseman Rafael Devers, 33-year-old Chris Young, 17-year old minor league starting pitcher Bryan Mata, 21-year-old minor league catcher Nick Sciortino and 21-year-old minor league first baseman Nick Longhi in return.
Notes: We get an Chris Young on a one year contract and Devers who is the 25th best prospect.

Traded 28-year-old second baseman Dee Gordon to the Baltimore Orioles, getting 22-year-old minor league catcher Chance Sisco, 20-year-old minor league third baseman Jomar Reyes and 30-year-old second baseman Ryan Flaherty in return.
Notes: We get a good enough second baseman on a one year contract with some prospects.

Traded 28-year-old first baseman Justin Bour, 25-year-old left fielder Christian Yelich and 19-year-old minor league starting pitcher Braxton Garrett to the New York Yankees, getting 28-year-old starting pitcher Michael Pineda, 21-year-old minor league shortstop Jorge Mateo and 20-year-old minor league shortstop Gleyber Torres in return.
Notes: The Yankees are more scary with two great players. We do trade one prospect, but he is no good. Mateo and Torres are top 100 prospects and with Micheal Pineda is good.

CF Gorkys Hernandez was claimed off waivers from San Francisco.
Notes: Depth

Signed free agent SS Clint Barmes to a 1-year contract worth a total of $535,000.
Notes: Depth

After transactions, we now have the 3rd best minor league system.

Team Picture:
Image

Lineups and Rotation:
Rotation:
1. Micheal Pineda - On a one year contract, we have to take a flyer on him. If he's good enough, we can get a draft pick back.
2. Adam Conley - Should pitch well. Should not see an ERA over 4.
3. Dan Straily - Innings eater.
4. Wei-Yen Chen - Hoping he can come back to what he was with the Orioles.
5. Edinson Volquez - Innings eater.
Long Relievers:
1. Tom Koehler - An OK starter turned long reliever. Should be good depth.
2. Dustin McGowan - Injuries are questionable, but will be a mop-up man/emergency starter.
Middle Relievers:
1. David Phelps - Our best middle reliever, he can pitch well into games too. Could become a super reliever.
2. Junichi Tazawa - Our second best middle reliever, he will be a good reliever to have in the bullpenn.
3. Nick Wittgren - A good enough reliver
Set-Up Men:
1. A.J. Ramos - A lights out former close who will man the eighth.
2. Brad Ziegler - A great reliever to get the seventh.
Closer:
1. Kyle Barraclough - Lights-out closer.
Depth Chart(it doesn't change against left and right):
Image
Lineup vs. Right:
1. Ichiro Suzuki - RF - It's Ichiro. He's gonna hit pretty good this year hopefully.
2. Gorkys Hernandez - CF - Below Average Center Fielder, but needs to work on fielding.
3. Derek Dietrich - 3B - An above average hitter at third.
4. Chris Young - LF - A below average hitter, but has some power.
5. J.T. Realmuto - C - A pretty good batter with good speed and defense.
6. Ryan Flaherty - 2B - A below average player.
7. Adeiny Hechavarria - SS - He can play defense.
8. Miguel Rojas - 1B - As for defense, he's good because he was a shortstop. Everything else is eh...
9. PITCHER
Lineup vs. Right:
1. Ichiro Suzuki - RF
2. Gorkys Hernandez - CF
3. Derek Dietrich - 3B
4. Chris Young - LF
5. J.T. Realmuto - C
6. Ryan Flaherty - 2B
7. Miguel Rojas - 1B
8. Adeiny Hechavarria - SS
9. PITCHER
Bench:
1. C A.J. Ellis - We have a veteran prescence, but not a starter
2. UTIL David Vidal - Good for depth.
3. 2B/SS Clint Barmes - Average at both positions, not really a hitter.
4. OF Moises Sierra - Um.... He can play every outfield position. Not much else though.

As for after that, the game went south. A.J. Ramos pitched 2.2 innings and gave up 1 run(the run was in the eigth in his first inning). This would tie up the game thanks to a Daniel Murphy single. In the tenth with two outs with the bases loaded, Kyle Barraclough struck out Adam Lind. However he would not get the same luck in the eleventh with the bases loaded. Daniel Murphy got another single and got a walk-off hit.

Miami Marlins (1-2) at Washington Nationals (2-1)

Matchup: LHP Gio Gonzalez (11-11, 4.57) vs. LHP Wei-Yen Chen (5-5, 4.96)

Linescore

MIA - 0,0,1,0,0,2,0,0,0...3-7-2

W: Gio Gonzalez (1-0) - 8 IP, 6 HA, 3 ER, 3 R, BB, 8 Ks, 1 HRA
L: Kyle Barraclough (0-2) - 1 IP, 2 R, 4 BB

Game Recap
Sometimes you lose by playing worse than the other team. This game, the Marlins lost by luck.

Hitting for the Marlins was not great, but small ball allowed the Marlins to get three runs. Wei-Yen Chen would give up 3 runs in his five innings.

By then, the game had come to the eigth and Kyle Barraclough blew another game. However it wasn't his particular pitching that lost the game, but Dietrich's fielding which was a throwing error allowing the Nationals to get two runs.

News:
Starting Pitcher Alex Wood threw a shutout against the San Diego Padres only allowing 7 hits and striking out 6.

Catcher Francisco Cervelli had five hits(all singles) against the Boston Red Sox.

Game Recap
Today, we got payback for what the Mets did to Dan Straily however we still weren't able to win.

8 runs in total were scored in the first inning, 5 were by the Marlins and 3 were by the Mets. After that, the Marlins offense did not do much else.

After Edison Volquez allowed another run in the 6th, Kyle Barraclough pitched with two runners on and only allowed a run. Barraclough would pitch an inning and a third before being relieved by A.J. Ramos.

A.J. Ramos gave two great innings and got into the ninth. With two runners on, the Marlins brought in Brad Ziegler. Ziegler would give up a walk-off single to Rene Rivera.

Game Recap
HAHAHA! The Marlins winning a game is like saying the Browns won't go 0-16.

With this came bad news though as Micheal Pineda is injured, but it looks to be a DTD injury. He will not pitch his next start. McGowan will not be starting in his place since Pineda will have six days until his next start.

McGowan also pitched in his place in this game, but failed in the eigth giving up 5 runs. He and Pineda also had a no-hitter going, but rip that so.

The Marlins cannot get a break.

News:
None to report.

Injury Report:
Micheal Pineda - Sore Shoulder 6-day DTD

L: Jaime Garcia (1-1) - 3.2 IP, 7 HA, 5 ER, 5 R, 2 BB, K, 1 HRA

Game Recap
Today, we saw a masterpiece from Adam Conley.

By the eigth, it was apparent that his arm was not in the right place, but he was determined to get that last inning. When Don Mattingly came out in the ninth for the ball, Adam Conley seemed to say no.

"I really wanted the ball tonight," Adam Conley said.

This is Adam Conley's second win this season and holds both wins for the team.

News:
Hishashi Iwakuma shut-out the Astros.

Game Recap
Baseball players strive for perfection. Perfect fielding, perfect hitting, perfict pitching.

However for fielding, it wasn't that great. The Marlins had three errors alone while the Braves had two.

Wei-Yen Chen pitched masterfully, getting 7 and a third of an inning while only allowing 3 ER. Phelps and Barraclough shut the Braves's bats down and got two scoreless innings after.(Well 1 and 2/3s let me round or else)

Matt Holiday got his 2000th hit with the Yankees. Just a single.

Game Recap
The Marlins bullpen is pretty bad.

Like not even on the good side of bad.

However today was a bullpen day and Dustin McGowan would helm the mound for the Marlins and got six quality innings only giving up 3 earned runs.

But the problem was not runs, but walks. McGowan allowed 9 of them.

The Marlins had A.J. Ramos pitch 2 innings(but gave up a 2-run homer to tie the game) and let him start the 9th inning. He was then relieved by Junichi Tazawa and Tazawa would give up a run which would be the last score of the game.

News:
None to really report.

Injury Report:
None to report.

Fun Fact:
Bruno Haas, Bill George, and Georgan Van Haltren are tied for the most walks in a 9-inning game.
Bruno Haas is the only one to be recorded in the 20th century and that was with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1915.

SV: Junichi Tazawa (1 SV) - 1.1 IP, 0 HA, 0 ER, 0 R

Game Recap
Micheal Pineda pitched a great game today, getting 7 innings and only giving up 4 hits and 1 run. That was not enough for the Marlins as the Marlins were not like no we need to give up another three in the eigth. What I'm learning is our bullpenn is trash and we should just give up.

Actually though we did do pretty good this game.

News:
Miami-Texas Trade Confirmed: Signed ... sealed ... and delivered.

Miami has worked out terms of a deal to send 31-year-old LHP Wei-Yin Chen to Texas for 21-year-old minor league RHP Ariel Jurado. Both teams expect to introduce their new players at press conferences later in the week.

A check of his career stats reveals Chen has chalked up 51 wins and 37 losses with 656 strikeouts and a 3.91 ERA. Opposing teams have put up a .260 batting average against him.

Call-Ups
We have called-up Jose Urena to majors and Ariel Jurado to AAA.
