Today the NCAA officially released a statement that Boise State University will be getting a Division I baseball team for the 2019 season.
Boise State has long awaited this program and we believe that they have the money to build suitable facilities for the bad weather in Boise. This program should be competitive soon as they have hired former Idaho Vandal three sport standout, Jordan Britton to be the head coach. Britton has already begun putting a recruiting class together mainly consisting of junior college players from the Pacific Northwest.

In order for this program to be competitive right off the bat, they are going to need to draw in some top flight junior college talent. Even though it is fairly late in the recruiting season, Coach Britton has shown confidence that his team will be able to compete in the 2019 season. Boise State will play in the Mountain West conference, bumping the total of teams in the conference up to a nice, even number, at 8. They will play against the typical Mountain West competitors: UNLV, Nevada, San Diego State, Fresno State, New Mexico, Air Force, and San Jose State.

Coach Britton will have lots of tasks to do over the coming months, such as recruiting, building a schedule, and most importantly, hiring a staff to support him in this journey. No one is expecting Boise State to be good off the bat, but with the competitive football and basketball teams, they are sure to draw some top notch recruits that will take this program over the top in the future.

With the season only two weeks away, Coach Britton has announced the official roster for the 2019 season. We are going to break down the roster and look at their chances of competing in the conference this year.

The Staff
The staff is led by freshman phenom, Marion Frese. Frese is a lefty who sits in the low 90's but can rev it up to 94 on occasion. Frese has good control and a solid slider changeup combo. Senior transfer from Lewis-Clark State, an NAIA school in Idaho, Toby Donovan, a RHP, has been named the Saturday starter. Donovan sits between 86 and 88, touching 90, and has a solid slider. His changeup isn't anything special, but he'll likely use it a decent amount against left-handed hitters. The Sunday starter, RHP Kyle Cordido, a juco transfer from Mountain Pointe College in North Dakota, has a fastball that sits from 87 to 89, touching 91. He has a decent curveball and will be working on a changeup next offseason according to Britton. The Tuesday starter will be RHP Austin Cust, a sophomore juco transfer from Brooks College in Oregon. Cust sits 80 to 82 on his fastball, touching 84. However, Cust is a sidearmer, and has a nice cutter changeup combo with a curveball he is working on. In the bullpen, we find another freshman phenom who will likely be the closer, RHP Shelby Pote. Pote sits 91 to 93, touching 95, and has phenomenal control. Pote only throws one breaking pitch though, but it is a wipeout slider. The other notable arms in the bullpen are freshman RHP Tyler Shibilo, who sits 85 to 87, touching 89, with a nasty curveball changeup combo, and junior juco transfer, RHP Domingo Avalos, who sits 86 to 88, touching 90, with a 3 breaking ball repertoire that includes a slider, curveball, and forkball.

The Catchers
The catchers on the travel roster are freshman, Hunter File, who has good contact and speed to go along with tremendous defense behind the plate, including one of the best arms we have ever seen, and junior, Edwin Villalta, who can hit for some power and provide some solid defense behind the plate.

The Infield
Across the diamond, from first to third, we have Tony Sandberg, Jacob Dransfeldt, Derrick Sessions, and Devin Zerbe. Sandberg, a junior from Westlake College in Wyoming, hits for power and is very fast for his build and position. Dransfeldt, a freshman, was a very highly touted recruit from Laramie High School in Wyoming, and is a very toolsy player. He has good contact and power, and is very fast. He also has a good arm at second base, and his range is solid, but could use some improvement. At shortstop is the senior transfer from Hawaii Pacific University, Derrick Sessions. Sessions doesn't have a good bat, but is very fast and has a top notch arm at shortstop. His defense is alright, but nothing special. And at third base, the sophomore transfer from Arizona State, Devin Zerbe, has great contact, but his defense makes him elite. He has a cannon arm and exceptional range at the hot corner. They also have another good second baseman, freshman, Zack Calloway, who should expect to get a lot of playing time this year. Calloway hits for power and has tremendous speed. He also has solid range at second.

The Outfield
The outfield seems to be the strongest area for the Broncos. The outfield is led by freshman star, Gabe Hodge, who will play LF. Hodge is the closest you can find to a 5-tool player on the Broncos as he pretty much excels at every aspect of baseball. In center, you find junior, Dawson Reynolds. Reynolds does everything pretty solid, but doesn't have any part of his game that's special. He should contribute some hits and some good plays in the outfield this year. And starting in RF, another freshman, Casey Jeroloman. Jeroloman is very fast and covers some serious range in the outfield. He is also an above average hitter that should contribute right away this year.

There is a full roster below for the players that did not make the article.

Broncos Come Away with Opening Day Win

In the Boise State Broncos first ever baseball game, they came away with a win over the home team, Illinois State Redbirds. The Broncos got on the board first in the top of the second inning when Dawson Reynolds singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. The next batter, Hunter File, singled him home for his first career RBI. The Redbirds got it going in the bottom of the third when junior Garrett Blackburn hit a solo home run to tie the game at 1. In the top of the fourth, freshman outfielder, Gabe Hodge, belted a solo home run, the first of his career to give the Broncos a 2-1 lead. The Broncos got it rolling again in the fifth when Devin Zerbe and Derrick Sessions got the inning going with back-to-back singles. Freshman lead-off hitter Jacob Dransfeldt came up next and singled Zerbe home to extend the lead to 3-1. The next batter, another freshman, Zack Calloway singled home Sessions to make it 4-1.

On the pitching side, standout freshman, Marion Frese, continued to dominate into the sixth. Frese would finish with 72 pitches in 5 and 2/3 innings earning the win (1-0). He gave up 3 hits and allowed 2 earned runs while striking out 2. Domingo Avalos came in to relieve Frese earning his first hold of the season. He went 2 and 1/3 innings on 29 pitches allowing 3 hits and an earned run while striking out 1. Freshman Shelby Pote came in for the ninth inning to earn his first career save as he went 3 up 3 down in the ninth on 6 pitches. For the Redbirds, the starter, Hugh Colyer went 3 and 1/3 innings throwing 46 pitches allowing 6 hits and 2 earned runs and earning the loss (0-1).

The Broncos will be back for games 2 and 3 of this series at Illinois State starting at 1 pm central tomorrow.
