Spring Training 2008 Part 2
Scottsdale, AZ

The squad was almost three weeks into spring training and, as Billy had promised, he still had the team working on fundamentals even one day before their first spring training game. Billy had all the infielders and pitchers, along with his coaches, on one field working on bunt coverage and scenarios, while Devon White had the outfielders on another field working on relay throws.

Occasionally Billy would stop his players and let them know exactly what he wanted to see them doing on a particular play, pointing out a position and telling them where they needed to be. The team had been executing fairly well today so, when Billy had to correct them, he at least he wasn’t yelling. “No one should be standing still. If you’re not moving towards the ball, you need to be moving to a base or the proper backup positions. Let’s run the wheel again.”

The team ran a few more drills and was interrupted when a man wearing pants and a brown polo shirt ran onto the field from an open gate on the third base side. He looked like he was in a panic and was about to try and run through the infield, but changed course when he saw the players looking startled in his direction. The man changed direction and started running up the line towards left field.

A second man entered the field wearing a shirt and tie as he gave chase of the first. “Jack! Jack! Running won’t help!”

“Nice job, doc. You were supposed to be keeping Merluzzi on his leash!” Billy yelled from his spot between short and third.

“David, what’s going on? Who is that guy?” Evan asked as he saw David Cone was now smirking and laughing softly.

“Isn’t that our play-by-play guy?” Doug Colangelo followed up as he recognized the first man.

“Yeah, it is. Jack has a bit of a… issue. The second guy is his therapist.” David said as he observed that Jack had now gotten himself cornered in the left field corner as his therapist was trying to calm him down.

“Condition?” Abbey asked sounding concerned as a few more people approached from outside of the fence that Jack couldn’t see.

“He’s harmless.” David said waving his hand. “He’s just been calling games for so long that that’s the only way he can talk now. He can’t have a normal conversation. His therapist is supposed to be helping him with that.”

“Oh my God!” Abbey shrieked as one of the people from the other side of the fence appeared to have shot Jack in the back and he began to stumble.

“Relax, Abbey. It’s just a tranquilizer gun.” David replied with another smile as Jack finally fell to the ground and Sal began to laugh.

“That’s not funny.” Abbey admonished. “Jason, back me up on this one.” She finished as Jason had wondered over from his shortstop position.

“You mean the fact that we have a play-by-play guy with a nervous tick that needs to be sedated? Nah, that’s not funny at all.” Jason said clear being sarcastic.

“You’re right, Jason. It’s not funny. It’s freaking hilarious.” Sal replied as he continued to laugh and Abbey rolled her eyes and refused to engage in the rest of the conversation while medics showed up and placed Jack on a stretcher and began carrying him off the field.

“Hey, doc! Maybe a strait jacket or a padded room would be in order so he doesn’t get out again and disrupt my practice!” Billy yelled as the doctors carried Jack off the field and the therapist apologized for the intrusion.

“I don’t know what Billy’s talking about. I hope he runs out on the field and has to get tranquilized during a regular season game. Now that would be funny.” Sal said with a laugh causing everyone to laugh with him.

“Come on, Abbey. You have to admit that was kind of funny.” Brad said as he approached Abbey, who wasn’t laughing, but was frowning as she looked over be the fence on the first base line. She looked unhappy about something as she observed Dawson and Santeri standing there with a third person. “Hey. You alright?”

“Huh? Yeah, I’m fine.” Abbey said as she briefly looked up but looked back at the trio near the fence.

“Hey, Dave. Who’s that standing there with Dawson and Santeri?” Jason asked since he didn’t recognize the third man.

“George Kaiser.” Abbey answered abruptly before David could as she wore the same frown. “He’s a big shot businessman in New Mexico. He owns a hot air balloon company.”

“Must be looking to advertise on our outfield walls or something.” Evan said.

“Hey, David. I’m ready to go once we get started.” Abbey said as she turned and walked roughly back onto the mound with the same expression.

“What do you make of that?” Evan asked quietly of Sal regarding Abbey’s odd behavior.

Sal shrugged and was about to say he had no idea, but was cut off when Billy yelled for practice to commence.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The team was now about halfway through spring training, and they were off to an abysmal start. They were last in the Cactus league in runs scored, average and ERA. And, what they did league in only made Billy angrier, as the team led the Cactus League in errors. Billy had been on the players night and day. He had changed the lineup and even had people playing out of position, but nothing seemed to be working.

Hoping to get the team to relax and take their mind off baseball for a bit, they had lost to the Reds that day 7-1, Jason had put together a team outing for the evening and most of the squad had shown up to go. They took the team bus and arrived at a family fun center and got off the bus once it stopped in the parking lot.

“I looked this place up when we first got to Arizona but just didn’t get a chance to come over here.” Kyle said as the team got off the bus.

“It looks like fun.” Dave Kester said as he saw a miniature golf course lit up by high powered lights and he could hear go-cart engines rumbling.

“I guarantee you guys we’re going to have a blast.” Jason said with a big smile and a light in his eye as he walked backwards leading the team down a walkway towards a main building. “They have mini-golf, go-carts, an arcade and a place to even get some food.”

“After the last few weeks we could use the night off. Thanks for putting this together, Jason.” Abbey said with a smile. “You really picked a winner here.”

“Imagine that, a loser picking a winner. Which is exactly what you all are, losers.” Everyone turned and looked behind them to find the source of the gruff voice that just lashed at them. There was an overly obese man approaching them. He was wearing a white tank-top, which had his large stomach sticking out from under it, a pair of shorts and sneakers and a Reds cap sat on his head. He was munching on a foot long sandwich and held an over-sized drink cup in his other hand. He was also sweating profusely, even though it was a cool night.

“What’s your problem, pal.” Sal cut as the man stomped a path to the front of the group.

“Hey! You’re the guy who wouldn’t stop heckling us today.” Cody said as he recognized the man who was yelling at them the whole game that day.

“Three combined errors and one really bad cut of throw between you and Garrett.” The man clicked his tongue in disapproval. “You’re all a disgrace to the game… Except you. How you doing Abbey?” The man finished sweetly as he bobbed his head at Abbey.

Abbey looked disgusted. “Yeah, that’s never going to happen.”

The man raised an eyebrow. “Who said I was even interested? Maybe if you were a Red I’d think about it.”

Sal laughed heartily. “Yeah right! Like you’re really in a position to turn down a date.” Sal finished still laughing.

The man laughed as well. “By the way, Garlisi. Did that ball Encarnacion hit off of you today land yet or is it still headed for Colorado?” Sal stopped laughing and looked annoyed. The Red’s fan started walking forward as he continued to laugh, taking a bite of sandwich as he walked away. “Later, losers. I have rides to ride.”

“I wouldn’t count on it. All the rides have a four hundred pound weight limit and no slimeing policy.” Sal yelled ahead to the man and the man replied by giving Sal the finger as he waddled away.

“Come on, guys.” Jason said as he attempted to restore the good feeling the group had just a couple minutes ago. “We aren’t going to let Jabba The Hut ruin our night out now, are we?”

“You’re right, Jason.” Kyle said as he sniffed the air. “I smell food, and I’m hungry.” He finished as the group started moving again.

“You know that’s the first place the Lord of the Blob is going to go, right?” Sal replied with a sideways smile.

The team went on and, for the most part, had a good night. But every now and then the Reds fan would show up and try to get under their skin. Evan was trying to make a round winning putt at the end of the mini-golf game, but missed the putt when the fan jumped out from behind a fake dinosaur and yelled “Losers!”

The team enjoyed their night off as they played games, went on rides, and ate hamburgers, hot dogs and ice cream. Around mid-night the team started cheerfully headed back to the bus, but their mood somber again when they saw there were police cars in the parking lot and an officer was talking to their driver.

According to the driver, someone had surprised him, put him in a sleeper hold and stole the bus.

“Damn. Billy’s going to be pissed.” Mike said with a frown.

He was right, after all, Billy was not a happy camper as he made the team run the whole next day.

Coincidentally, the Reds fan showed up at the first Cincinnati home game of the regular season with a brand new tailgate bus, painted red, with Red’s logos on the side and front of the bus. He was never quite clear how he got the bus.

Subject: Player Evaluation Start of 2008 Season, MLB Roster

Here are the player evaluations and practice plans we spoke about at our end of preseason meeting.
(*Success Player, **Edited Player, No indicator = Graybar)

Starting lineup
*Cody Zeller 22/CF (R/R) 2/E7/E92/B12/D8/D8/D8: Stealing, AGR Run, AGR Field
He’ll hit enough to raise contact, we’ll put him in fielding practice and he’ll become and elite defender.

**Kyle Garrett 24/LF (L/L) 2/E7/D107/C10/D9/D8/D8: 2ND Pos. (RF), Cannon Arm
Fielding stats are good enough for LF. Adding speed will make up for average Def. evaluation.

*Jason Piersol 19/SS (R/R) 3/E6/C123/C10/C11/D9/D9: Throwing
He’ll get the AB’s to raise connect rating. Fielding practice will turn him into best SS in the game.

**Mike Bruner 23/1B (L/L) 3/E6/C121/F4/E6/E7/D8: GD Morale, Consistency
His below average defense needs to be addressed, but he should hit well out of the 4 hole.

Joe Bannon 19/DH-3B (S/R) 3/E7/C135/F4/E7/F5/E7
Joe’s not ready to defend on an MLB level yet, but he’ll provide plenty of offence out of the DH spot.

Duke McGlinchy 23/3B (L/R) 2/F5/D107/F4/D8/F5/D9
He’s our best defensive 3B and has a lot of work to do to hold off Bannon next year.

Pedro Solano 21/CF (L/R) 3/E6/F81/D8/D8/C10/E7: Breakup DP
He’s out of position in RF. Good enough D, would love to develop power.

Candy Moldanado 22/2B (S/R) 1/D8/E92/E7/D8/D8/D8: Sparkplug
A solid defender, could be top end with a little practice.

Sean McMillan 22/C (S/R) 1/E7/D102/E6/C10/D9/D8: GD Small Ball
Nick Dirosa 22/C (R/R) 1/D8/E90/E7/D9/C10/C10
Both are good defenders with little to no differences in ability. They’ll split games evenly unless one pulls ahead of the other. They could see time at 2B and a position change next year could be possible.

Bench
Jose Depablos 22/1B (S/L) 3/F4/D107/F4/E6/F4/D8
A mess defensively but could be a good PH if we can raise connect rating.

Dave Kester 23/SS (L/R) 2/F5/E90/D8/D9/D8/E7
We could have a super utility man here. Will need to learn more positions next spring.

Myles Ormond 25/CF (S/R) 2/F5/E97/D8/D9/D8/D8
Good enough defensively to be our fourth OF, needs more speed.

Pitching Staff
Rotation
‘1. *Sal Garlisi 21/L 96/C144/A170/DCB4/SLD4/2SF2: VS. Lefty, W/RISP, GD Low Pitch, Recovery, Pace
Our definite #1. Will work on breaking stuff during the season and add a fourth next spring.

2. *Abbey Baker 22/R 94/D126/B143/FRK4/CB3/SLD2: VS. Lefty, W/RISP, Recovery, GD Pace
Her forkball was better than anyone thought. Could be a dominant pitch.

3. **Evan Andrews 25/L 94/E117/B136/VSL3/SLD3: Fastball Life, Recovery, GD Pace
Below average control but should hit his spots well enough. Will work on breaking stuff during season.

4. **Brad Lawson 25/R 93/E115/B129/SPL3/KCB3: Gball Pitcher, Recovery, GD Pace
Gets a lot of groundballs and should continue to do so when splitter and curve get better.

5. Kenji Wei 25/R 92/E116/C94/KN3/FRK3/CB/2
Don’t know how much it’s worth trying to stretch out a 25/yo. He’s first up at #5.

SW. Vance Mattison 25/L 90/E119/C98/CB3/FRK2/CUT1: Walk
Would like to see him throw harder. Could be a long term bullpen fixture.

LHS. Boris Trzesniak 22/L 91/E111/C91/FRK3/CB3: GD Small Ball, Sparkplug
Control is an issue and needs to be cleaned up. Should be able to retire tough lefties.

MR. Devon Reid 23/L 93/D127/C90/FRK3/CB2/KN1
Forkball can be a great pitch coming out of the pen, would also like to see CB improve.

MR. Otis Sequea 22/R 90/D121/C96/CB3/SLD2/FRK1: Sparkplug
Needs to add a few MPH to fastball. Could be a good setup man down the road.

Set. Hank Erdos 22/L 92/D125/C90/FRK3/CB2/SLD1
Good fastball and mix of breaking stuff. Better control would make him even more effective.

Set. Doug Colangelo 19/R 93/D134/C100/FRK4/SLD3
Good fastball, breaking pitches and control. Stretching him out is paramount in getting him in rotation.

CL. Alberto Montes 26/L 95/D121/C88/CB3/SLD3/FRK2: Star
Needs to have better control if he wants to remain our closer.

Notes: We could use more team speed, and we still don’t have a true RF on the roster. I’m going to be playing Dirosa and McMillian at second base throughout the season to get them used to the position. Both are so good defensively I don’t see how Maldanado does enough to hold one of them off by next spring if they change position. Candy could become expendable next season.
Same could be said for Wei. Colangelo is much younger and just needs to be stretched out over the season to claim a rotation spot. Colangelo could challenge for a rotation spot as high as #3 next spring.
We’ll wait to see when Bannon is ready to take the 3B job away from McGlinchey.

From: Billy Radowski

Subject: Player Evaluation Start of 2008 Season, AAA Roster

Here is the list of players we will be sending to AAA complete with requested evaluations.

Peter Gemoll 19/SS (R/R) 1/E6/F77/E6/E6/D9/E6
A definite project. He has a long ways to go before he’s ready for MLB action.

Leos Sedlacek 24/SS (S/R) 1/F4/F70/E6/D8/D9/E6
A 24 year old SS should be better developed. We have 3 other SS on the roster better or younger.

Connor McMillan 21/1B (R/R) 2/G3/C126/F5/G3/G3/D8
Will be up at some point as a PH but nothing more. His defense is abysmal.

Phillip Buchanon 20/2B (L/R) 1/E7/F74/F4/F4/E7/E6: Tough Runner
Maybe he can develop into a solid backup.

Jake Reid 27/3B (R/R) 2/F4/D110/F5/E6/F4/F5
Jake’s another guy who should be better developed at 27. We have better, younger 3B’s than him.

Henry Mallette 20/3B (S/R) 2/E6/D106/F4/E7/F4/F4: Error Prone
He can hit a bit. Could become a solid backup to give guys a day off.

George Hietpas 20/C (S/R) 2/G3/F67/F4/D9/D9/E6
Another talented catcher. He’s good enough now to be a backup.

Pat VanHekke 21/CF (R/R) 2/E7/E92/E6/D8/C10/D8
Slow for an OF. Power potential is intriguing. Could change positions.

Greg Camillo 18/R/P 95/E113/C88/CB3/SLD1: Hot Head, Sparkplug
His breaking stuff needs work, will probably see time in pen this season. Could start in a couple years.

Andy Ashby 20/R/P 95/F100/C91/CB3/2SF1/CUT1: Battler
Once Andy get some control he’ll see time in the pen. Could start if developed properly.

John Echnos 24/L/P 91/C136/C99/CB3/FRK1
Good control. Forkball needs work, then John could be a fixture in the pen.

Lane Merrill 20/R/P 95/F105/C96/FRK3/SLD1
Control needs work before he can get into the pen, then needs better secondary pitches.

Moses Mosquerna 21/L/P 91/E113/C86/FRK3/SLD1
Could work exclusively against lefties if Trzesniak struggles early. Could eventually land a rotation spot.

Trent Raines 26/R/P 95/E118/C84/CB2
We have pitchers that are younger and more developed. Middle relief is as far as he goes.

Roadrunners sign FA outfielder David Newhan
Albuquerque Journal Sports
By Doug Mosley
3/31/08

With just a few days to go before the start of the 2008 season, the Roadrunners have signed journeyman outfielder David Newhan to a one year deal to help sure up their outfield defense.

“David’s a veteran and a professional.” Owner/GM Dawson Benfield said yesterday at Albuquerque Park. “He plays all outfield positions and gives Billy (Manager Billy Radowski) options off the bench.”

It’s not hard to see where Albuquerque will need the help in the outfield. Pedro Solano struggled veritably this preseason as he attempted to make the move from centerfield to right, committing six errors at his new position. Despite the errors, Albuquerque likes Solano’s potential, and would like him playing outfield full time and for Newhan to come into the game late as a defensive replacement.

“You understand this is a young team and that you’re not going to get a lot of playing time. And that’s fine with me. I’m happy to help mentor the younger guys.” Said Newhan (L-R/2/E7/F80/D8/E6/C10/D8), 34, who will be by far the oldest member on the Roadrunners roster this season.

To make room on the roster for Newhan, Albuquerque has sent OF Myles Ormond to AAA Enid.

2008 Season
CH 1: Nervous Dispositions

The Roadrunners had finally made it to opening day. The team had gathered earlier that day and had run through pre-game warmups and batting practice before retreating to the clubhouse as they waited for game time to draw near. The team had seemed relaxed during workouts that afternoon as the atmosphere had been light. Though things seemed to be changing as the day began to move to evening.

The lazy atmosphere that surrounded the team in the afternoon, had given way to a nervous, anxious silence that was now working its way through the clubhouse, as the only sounds that could be heard were from music being played from an MP3 player. Most of the players were sitting at their lockers and, if they had decided to talk to their neighbors, it was a hushed, brief conversation. Some stood up and paced nervously, only to sit back down and fidget with their hands, gloves or anything they could get their hands on. Even Sal, who was normally boisterous, was unusually quiet as he and Sean sat silently going over scouting reports on the Athletics.

The only one who seemed to be loose was David Newhan, who had been through several opening days prior to this one. He was wondering around the clubhouse trying to chat up his teammates and get them to try and relax. A few times he was able to get a smile or two before the player went right back to looking as apprehensive, as one would look waiting to get a root canal.

David finally gave up as he walked over to a corner of the clubhouse where the coaches were gathered and shook his head. “I can’t remember the last time I saw an entire group wrapped this tight.” He said quietly as he approached the coaches.

“It’s not going to do anyone in here any good being this nervous. We need to get these guys to calm down in the next couple of minutes.” Billy said as he turned to his staff. “Any suggestions?”

“A room full of vibrant, young men? We could always have some swimsuit models walk around in here. That should unlock their brains.” David Cone said with a smirk.

“I don’t think Abbey would appreciate that.” Brett Boone replied with a sigh.

“I got nothing then.” David said with a shrug.

“Maybe it would help if you said a couple words to the guys.” Mike Lieberthal said to Billy. “It may make them feel better hearing from you.”

Billy raise an eyebrow. “Since when have I ever been a ‘rah-rah’ guy?”

“Point taken.” Mike said as he stepped up and looked over the clubhouse. “Alright everyone, listen up.” Mike had said to get everyone’s attention. He hadn’t planned on addressing the team and was hoping some kind of inspirational words would work themselves into his small speech. “I know this is the first big league game for a lot of you and that you’re all feeling a bit ner…”

Mike was cut off as a might belch echoed through the room. Mike looked across the clubhouse floor and the rest of the team turned to find the source of the disturbance.

There was a table towards the back of the room that some of the bullpen guys were either sitting around or sitting on. They had all turned as well and looked at the one pitcher that was standing.

“Dude, are you alright?” Devon Reid asked as he looked over at Doug Colangelo, the one who belched, who had balled his hand into a fist and placed it over his mouth. Devon swore Doug looked pale.

“Yeah I’m…” Doug was cut off as he involuntarily belched, a bit softer this time, and took a few deep breaths. “I’m… I’ll be ok.” He finished shakily.

“Son, are you sure you’re all right?” Mike asked sounding concerned as he saw Doug looked pale and was sweating, even though the clubhouse was cool. “You don’t look so good.”

“Yeah… I’m… never been this nervous.” Doug was trying to fight it as he belched for a third time and his eyes got wide. “Oh, no!” He said unsteadily, his hand flying to cover his mouth as he began to run, knocking a few of his fellow pitchers out of their chairs and too the floor as he streaked for the bathroom. There was a stunned silence that briefly hung over the clubhouse that was broken by a door banging open shortly followed by Doug throwing up loudly.

The clubhouse was stunned, but the incident seemed to have loosened most of the players up as they were now having disbelieving conversations about what just happened.

“I’ll go see how he’s doing.” The trainer said after a second round of vomiting echoed through the clubhouse, and he scurried towards the bathroom.

“Alright. I guess that about covers that.” Billy said trying not to laugh as he started walking for the clubhouse exit. “I’ll see everyone in the dugout in five. Relievers can head straight for the bullpen.”

------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Roadrunners were wrapping up their warm-ups when Doug finally arrived in the bullpen. He still looked pale, but had regained some color and didn’t look as sick anymore.

“Hey, you alright?” Vance Mattison asked as Doug had a seat on the end of a bench Vance was sharing with Boris Trzesniak and Hank Erdos.

“Huh? Yeah, I’m feeling much better now.” Doug said as he unscrewed the cap on a bottle of pink liquid he was holding before he took two big swallows.

“Are you really chugging Pepto?” Hank asked, sounding astonished.

“Mmmm… yeah. The doc only gave me a cap full and it wasn’t working, so I swiped this when he wasn’t looking.” Doug said as he capped the pepto.

“You do know you’re only supposed to have like a cap full of that at a time?” Vance asked rhetorically as he looked at the bottle. “You already drank half the bottle!”

“Yeah, so?” Doug asked clueless and all Hank could do was stare, dumbfounded, as he missed Sal throwing a first pitch strike to start the season.

Oakland Athletics VS. Albuquerque Roadrunners 4/2

Roadrunners hang on and sneak by A’s for opening day win

Albuquerque- A packed, raucous, crowd turned out for the roadrunners inaugural game tonight, and they weren’t disappointed. A great defensive performance helped backup Sal Garlisi fantastic start, and the offence did just enough to hang in there and earn their first victory of the season.

There was a parade of firsts for the Roadrunners in the first inning, starting with Garlisi striking out Eliis, leading off the game for Oakland, to record the franchise’s first strikeout. Cody Zeller would record the first hit in the home half of the first, but was on the wrong end of the record books when he was promptly picked off first.

Jason Piersol showed off his defensive prowess in the second inning as he ranged deep in the hole at short to field a groundball before making a strong throw to nab the runner at first, then made a similar play on a slow roller up the middle the next inning. Piersol and Mike Bruner then hooked up for a pretty 3-6-3 double play to end the fourth inning.
Not to be out done, David Newhan flashed the leather, as he made an astounding diving catch near the right field line to rob Mike Sweeny of an extra base hit in the fifth.

Albuquerque would get their first run in the bottom of the fifth when Duke McGlichey lined an opposite field base hit to left, scoring Joe Bannon from second. Oakland would get the run back the next inning. After retiring Denorfia between a pair of singles from Ellis and Eric Chavez, Frank Thomas ripped an RBI double to score Ellis. Garlisi got tough from there as he got the next two batters to strike out to limit the damage to just a single run.

An inning opening double from Jason Piersol in the seventh was followed up by RBI doubles from Mike Bruner and Joe Bannon as Albuquerque would take the lead.

Not wanting to over tax his starter, Billy Radowski went to the bullpen to start the eighth and, after just one pitch from Doug Colangelo, got himself ejected. Radowski wasn’t happy with the strike zone all night and let the umpire have it when Colangelo’s first pitch to Chavez seemed to clip the outside corner and was called a ball.
When play resumed Chavez laced a double, his fourth hit of the game, to left center and scored later on an Emiel Brown sac fly.

“I felt like my guys were getting squeezed all night and I had just about enough of it.” Billy said after the game. “I though his strike zone sucked and I made sure he knew about it.”

Kurt Suzuki made things interesting by getting on in the ninth before Alberto Montes closed the door and got Denorfia to ground out to end the game.

I’m going to do my game logs like a newspaper article when I write them up, similar to had I did my old Pelicans and ’07 Riptide log, complete with a small box score and key stat lines for each team. I’m also going to feature “the next 10 games,” which is nothing more than the games on my upcoming schedule.

I’m going to try and do one game log per series/ two per each trip through my starting rotation, that’s where the “Planned game logs” comes in. I’m projecting my games out over two weeks and figuring out ahead of time, where I want to do a log, and who my projected starter for that game will be.

As for player and owner stories, I’m going to put them in there whenever I have time to write them up. I have some story lines in place for season #1 and I should be starting them soon. But, when they are posted, will be a matter of when I can sit down and write them out.

Albuquerque Roadrunners @ Toronto Blue Jays 4/5

Another “One” for Roadrunners

Toronto- Four games into the young season and the Roadrunners have played just as many one-run games as they won a slugfest in Toronto, the second high scoring game in as many nights, 8-7. Albuquerque was able to get the win despite a dreadful start from Evan Lawson, who only went 3.2 innings, and gave up five of Toronto’s runs while striking out just one.

The Jays broke through early, getting an RBI single in the first from Vernon Wells and a two-run homerun from Greg Zaun in the second, putting Toronto up by three early. Albuquerque answered back in the fourth. Kyle Garret led off with a single and Jason Piersol walked setting up Mike Bruner who blasted a three run homerun, the first by any roadrunner this season, to tie the game up at three.
Toronto retook the lead in the bottom of the inning getting and RBI double from David Eckstien and an RBI triple from Aaron Hill which ended Lawson’s night.

“It’s a tough lineup and Evan didn’t have his best stuff. He’ll have to just find a way to bounce back.” Skipper Billy Radowski said after the game.

Albuquerque got one back in the fifth on a Garrett RBI single and added four more in the sixth. With the bases loaded, Joe Bannon lined a base hit to left for an RBI single. Alex Rios misplayed the ball and it rolled all the way to the wall allowing two more runs to score and Bannon to move to second. David Newhan would drive him in two batters later with a single to center.

Rios tried to atone for his error in the eighth, hitting a two run homerun off Doug Colangelo, to pull Toronto within one. But that was as close as they would get as Alberto Montes pitched a perfect ninth, earning his second save of the year.
