May 16, 2010: Padres Drop Series to Mets
The Mets won a key series against the Padres thanks to Carlos Delgado's heroics. San Diego took an early 2-0 lead on a Victor Martinez home run. This was not to last, however, as Carlos Delgado drove a 3-run home run in the fourth. It was especially disappointing for Francisco Jaramillo after he carried a perfect game into the eighth the last time he faced New York. Jaramillo was still solid, finishing with 7 innings and only 3 earned runs. His opponent, Justin Verlander, bested him this time with a complete game. He also only allowed five hits- all of which came from the top three hitters in the San Diego lineup. The Friars remain in a tie with the Giants for first in the division, but their recent performances have given some hope of an eventual takeover.

Mid-May 2010 Update: Padres in Unexpected Tie with Giants
Last season, the Friars won 35 more games than the Giants. This year, the Giants have arguably out-played them in 2010. San Francisco has almost 60 more runs than the Padres and is slightly above them in batting average. Most importantly, the Giants seemingly solved a major pitching issue. Curt Schilling has rebounded quite well from a rough season in 2009, and the remainder of the rotation has been solid as well. This is especially unexpected as they traded Tim Lincecum last year, which was a move that was heavily criticized throughout last season. As for the Padres, it is becoming clear that their offense is too HR-dependent. They have hit nearly 60 more home runs than the Giants despite the 60-run gap, meaning the Giants have been more effective at getting men on base. Putting runners on has been a significant issue for San Diego the last three seasons, so the solution may be to acquire a better contact hitter. The Padres have been pretty quiet on the transaction front since the 2008-09 offseason, so they may be primed to make a big splash before the deadline. Even still, concerns that they may fall off completely seem to be unfounded at this point.

May 30, 2010: Padres Close Great Month with Another Win over Colorado
In 14 matchups between the two teams, Colorado has failed to win a single game. Even worse for them, most of the games were complete blowouts. That was also the case this time, although Colorado made it a save situation in the ninth. Heading into the ninth, the Padres led 7-1. They jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on hits from Jack Cust, Khalil Greene, and Kevin Kouzmanoff. Overall though, Adrian Gonzalez was the star as he hit two home runs and scored aN additional run. In his final start of the month, Francisco Jaramillo shined. He did not notch a quality start after he was left in for too long, but he still finished with a strong line- 4 ER through 8.1 innings. After the game, the rookie hurler was named rookie of the month for the National League. With the win, San Diego finished a month that saw them erase an unexpected deficit and reclaim their stranglehold on the division.

May 2010 Update: Friars Turn Deficit Into Commanding Lead
After some doubts, the Padres re-established themselves as the best team in the National League. In the entire month of May, the team lost just 6 games. Their run differential was superb at +63, much better than April's +25. There were several storylines, but the best may have been their rookies. Francisco Jaramillo and Jason Blackburn have now each won rookies of the month. The race for rookie of the year could be contained in San Diego, and betting odds slightly favor Jaramillo at the moment. Another storyline may be the Cy Young Race, which right now includes Kelvim Escobar, John Lackey, Zach Duke, and Jake Peavy. Greg Maddux may also be on the outside looking in if voters favor win-loss record as he is currently 7-0. Escobar has leaped out to replace Peavy as the betting favorite, but the Padres will face the second-place Giants many times in the rest of the season, which will give them a chance to knock Escobar off the leader spot. Lastly, the home-run race seems to be between Jack Cust, Kevin Kouzmanoff, Alex Rodriguez, and Victor Martinez. While A-Rod is the favorite, Jack Cust has built an impressive track record in San Diego, which may propel him to the top of the leaderboard. As the division lead continues to widen, Padres fans may be more interested in the HR race, especially with the surging Padres facing the struggling Giants many times in the next few months.

2010 MLB Draft: Padres Make Major Trade
Heading into the 2010 draft, the Padres shocked the baseball world by acquiring Cy Young candidate Zach Duke for Cla Meredith, Jason Kubel, and Victor Soler. The Padres may very well have five potential Cy Young candidates, as well as the frontrunner for rookie of the year, in their rotation. The trade also seems to preclude another move, since Anibal Sanchez was made expendable. With the departure of Kubel, it seems like the trade may be for an outfielder. The move signals San Diego's willingness to compete for a championship after last season's heartbreak. In the draft, the Padres went pitching-heavy. In the first round, they selected Jimmy Donovan. Donovan's initial numbers are quite low, so the Padres will need to develop him for some time. In the second round, they selected Ricardo Smitherman, who may actually be the better selection. Smitherman is two years younger and has a higher top speed, as well as more dependable breaking pitches. Their best addition was arguably Ryan Finegan, who carries the highest top speed of all pitchers selected in the draft, as well as a plethora of breaking balls. While these additions may not pitch in the show for a while, they have time to develop as the Padres' starters age. Meanwhile, relievers Bill Speedman and Daniel Cebidae were called up to the majors to replace Cla Meredith. While Meredith was one of the most consistent relievers in baseball, Cebidae and Speedman carry greater upside. As always, post your trade/draft grades below!

C grade if you don’t include the two success guys. Going all pitchers when they’re your greatest strength lowers it a bit, plus none of them really stand out. Donovan and Finegan could be decent.

Padres Add Probable All-Star Curtis Granderson to Best Roster in Baseball
Image
The rich have gotten richer in the Majors as the San Diego Padres have acquired Curtis Granderson from the Detroit Tigers. It was quite the haul given up for him, as the team sent Anibal Sanchez, Great Gordon, and Jason Vargas to Motown. Still, the move signals San Diego's desire to redeem their World Series loss. They've given up six total players for two likely All-Stars in Zach Duke and now Curtis Granderson. In Detroit, Granderson batted .322 with 16 home runs, 43 runs batted in, and 52 runs scored. His on-base percentage nears .450, and he is known for his base-stealing ability. He will likely bat third in San Diego's lineup, pushing a struggling Adrian Gonzalez down to fifth. With a lineup of Cust, Granderson, and Blackburn, the Padres will complement their elite pitching staff. They have already won 13 straight for a league-best 47-17 record, and that can only be expected to improve with recent roster additions.

June 16, 2010: Lackey Shines in 3-Hit Shutout
The Padres won their 17th straight game, riding their elite pitching staff in another shutout. This time, it was potential Cy Young winner John Lackey who carried the Padres. Lackey threw a complete-game shutout, striking out five and allowing just three hits. Lackey's ERA is hovering around 1.50, which would certainly guarantee a Cy Young award and All-Star appearance if he maintains his current rate. On offense, Adrian Gonzalez was the primary performer, driving in 4 out of 5 of San Diego's runs on two home runs. Gonzalez has struggled a bit in the past few weeks, so seeing him hit two homers is great news for the Friars. The Padres are circling on MLB history with their 17th straight win, and Friar Fever is at an all-time high. With a favorable interleague schedule, anything is possible for San Diego.

Mid-June 2010 Update: Padres Inching Toward History
The longest win streak in MLB history belongs to the 1916 New York Giants, who won 26 straight games. In the 21st Century, the 2002 Oakland Athletics have the longest win streak with 20 wins. The 2010 San Diego Padres may break both of these records, as they have shown no signs of slowing down. Most recently, they shut out the Chicago White Sox in a dominant 5-0 win. Arguably, the Padres' rotation is the best in league history. After the Anibal Sanchez deal, not a single starter carries an ERA over 2.99. At the plate, the Padres once again lead the league in home runs and the recent addition of Curtis Granderson will only boost that number. Granderson also helps the team's on-base percentage and base-stealing, which will only increase their run total. The Padres have clearly been motivated by their 2009 World Series failure, and they are already an essential guarantee to win their second-straight division title. The main question now may be whether the Friars can break the record for most wins in a regular season.

June 30, 2010: Padres Drop Final Game of June, Still Finish With a Strong Monthly Record
Earlier in the season, it looked as if San Francisco could have challenged the Padres for the NL West title. While the Padres now lead by over 10 games, the Giants have played them quite well. They won two straight to close out the month, the first via a Schilling shutout, and the second via tonight's walk-off victory. The Giants jumped out to an early lead, which has been rare for teams to do against Brandon Webb this season. The Friars, like usual, struck back with home-runs from Jack Cust and Victor Martinez. Victor Martinez came through a second time in the eighth, driving a gap-double to put his team in front. However, this lead was not to last, as Joba Chamberlain dealt with arm fatigue. Bill Speedman replaced him on short notice and gave up consecutive doubles. With this, the Giants beat the Padres for the second straight time. While the Giants will not be competing for the division, they could potentially be a Wild Card threat in the postseason.

June 2010 Update: 1990s Braves Have Competition
Currently, the four NL ERA leaders all play for the same team. John Lackey, Jake Peavy, Brandon Webb, and Zach Duke, as well as Francisco Jaramillo, could very well make the case to be the greatest rotation in MLB history. As a team, the Friars carry an ERA of 2.45. Opposing hitters just have not been able to touch these pitchers. Greg Maddux's influence is likely present since the Padres do not blow hitters away, but they outlast them with accurate breaking pitches. While the pitching staff is on another level, the offense has had its best season in the past three years. Currently, Jack Cust is a potential MVP candidate, and Victor Martinez is right behind him. With a healthy Victor Martinez, the Padres' offense is on another level. Adrian Gonzalez is also having a bounceback season, but it appears as if he is no longer the star hitter in the lineup. The main weakness in the lineup has been Khalil Greene, but he has compensated with his glove. With the addition of Curtis Granderson beginning to pay dividends, the Padres may push to break the record for most wins in a season.

July 17, 2010: Padres Win 69th Game, Head into All-Star Break
The Padres won their 69th game of the season mainly due to two players- Curtis Granderson and Jake Peavy. The 2007 and 2009 NL Cy Young Winner tossed his second consecutive complete game and allowed just one run. At the plate, Curtis Granderson won the game near singlehandedly. Granderson accounted for 40% of the team's hits and all of the team's RBI. If it weren't for him, Jake Peavy may have been given a tough-luck loss. Instead, the Padres won quite comfortably. The Diamondbacks threatened in the 8th after putting runs at second and third, but Adrian Gonzalez made a tremendous diving stop to keep the game at 4-1. In the ninth, Peavy recorded three straight outs to accomplish another impressive win.

2010 All Star Break Update: Padres Nearly Identical to 2001 Mariners
In 2001, the Seattle Mariners started the season 70-27. In 2010, the Padres sport a near-identical record. With the addition of Curtis Granderson, the Padres have the highest-ranking offense in their division, which is already in addition to one of the greatest pitching staffs in league history. With the All-Star Game set to take place, the Padres sent Victor Martinez (starter), Jack Cust (starter), John Lackey, Jake Peavy, Zach Duke, Brandon Webb, Rudy Seanez, Joba Chamberlain, Orlando Hudson, and Curtis Granderson to the City of Angels. It is remarkable for any team to send 10 All-Stars, showcasing how strong this Padres team is. It is also a well-deserved break for the rest of the team- and several players will benefit from additional rest. In the last two seasons, Padres players have won ASG MVPs (Adrian Gonzalez in 2008, Greg Maddux in 2009), so it will be interesting to see if the voters choose another Friar. Ultimately though, home-field advantage in the Fall Classic is the main goal to strive for.

2010 MLB All-Star Game: National League Wins Third Straight
For the third straight season, the National League will host the opening game of the World Series. It was mainly pitchers on display this season as the National League shut-out the American League- the first time that has happened since 1996. This can be partially attributed to the sheer number of Padres pitchers on the roster. John Lackey set the tone with a scoreless inning in the first, but Joba Chamberlain ultimately had the best night, striking out the side to close the game. At the plate, Jack Cust was one of the biggest contributors thanks to a solo home-run. To reward the staff's efforts, voters selected Ryan Dempster, the winning pitcher, as MVP. Though, Albert Pujols or Joba Chamberlain would have been much better options. More importantly for the Friars, they will be guaranteed to host Game 1 of the World Series if they get there, adding another key incentive.

July 31, 2010: Doc Halladay Snaps Friars' Win Streak
Heading into the game, the Padres carried a 9-game win streak as well as a 15-game win streak against the Rockies. Both of these were not to last as Roy Halladay stifled Padres' hitters. This season, San Diego's offense has been borderline historic, but it was shades of early 2008 tonight. In that season, Doc Halladay nearly threw a no-hitter against a much weaker Friars' offense, and he almost did it again tonight. Kevin Kouzmanoff was responsible for 2/3 of the team's hits, with Jack Cust getting the other via a weak infield single. Greg Maddux struggled early once again, but he settled in to allow just 3 runs in 5.1 innings. Still, it was not enough for Maddux to improve upon his 11-1 record, and the Rockies won their first game against the Padres since 2009.

So far your Game 1 and 2 predictions have been the opposite of right, so I'm gonna predict the Indians have a 3-1 lead after Game 4.
