Post subject: | Poll of the Day #132 | Is a "fat tax" necessary? |
http://sourcefednews.com/fat-tax-for-ai ... assengers/ So apparently, some Economics professor came up with a formula where the more you weigh, the more you pay to fly on a plane. His three different models are: 1. Total weight: A passenger’s luggage and body weight is calculated, with the fare comprising a per kilo/pound cost. For example: A passenger weighing 220 pounds with 44 pounds of luggage would pay twice than that of a passenger of 110 pounds with 22 pounds of luggage. 2. Base fare +/- extra: A base fare is set, with a per-pound discount applying for “underweight” passengers and a per-pound surcharge applying to “overweight” passengers. 3. High/Average/Low: A base fare is set, with a predetermined discount applying for those below a certain weight threshold and a predetermined surcharge applying for those above a certain weight threshold. Personally, I don't like this. I'm sorta biased because me and the majority of my family are overweight (partially because of bad eating habits, but also just genetics), but also because this hurts men in general, but especially tall men. For example, the average man would have to pay more than the average woman just because they are bigger. And then a tall man will have to pay a lot more than a short woman, because that's just how the genetics turned out. |

I see what the guy was thinking and trying to do, but I don't think this is right. It's taking it too far. I saw this on CNN Student News today, in History class. |

This sounds stupid... Really stupid. I should probably read the whole thing, though, but wow. |

I mean, I get the point. The more weight, the more fuel is burned, and the more you have to buy. But it has serious flaws |

Yeah, this seems pretty crass, but I understand it, sort of. I still think it's dumb, though |

You and/or your fat relatives need to drop some pounds. The U.S. is the most overweight country on the PLANET. Flying thru the air is not a right. And you are basically paying for an airline to fly a "package" to your destination of choice. If your "package" weighs twice as much as mine, we should not pay the same rate. Lay off the Cinnabuns and eat some kale. |
