Woah. These update styles make it look like you've done this before. They also look a little like mine. :D Which isn't a bad thing.

Pittsburgh Pirates (2-1) @ Florida Marlins (0-3)
April 4, 2008

Jason Bay Hits for the Cycle

Bay has done what most players can only dream of doing, hitting for the cycle! It started in the first inning with a solo shot to left. In the fourth he hit a lead-off double to right. In the sixth he slammed a base hit through the gap between second and third. And he capped off his amazing night with a fly ball to the triangle in center for a stand-up triple. But all was not well for the Pirates. In the bottom of the ninth, Luis Gonzalez started the inning with a double. Capps got Mike Jacobs to line out, but gave up a single to Jeremy Hermida, causing the pinch runner Cody Ross to score. After a wild pitch and a ground out by Jorge Cantu to move the runner over to third, Matt Treanor popped a single over the head of Sanchez, giving the Marlins a walk-off victory for their first win of the season. After the game, Bay was asked about his accomplishment. "I'm really honored to be in this situation, and this will be one of my greatest baseball memories. But it's not about putting up stats and breaking records, it's about winning, and unfortunately we couldn't do that today." In the press conference after the game, Jason Stark had a much different view. "I'm really proud of Jason and I feel this is a huge thing in his career. It's not everyday you hit for the cycle, if it was, nobody would care! As for the game, yeah, it's disappointing we lost, but it's just one game, we've got another 158 to go. We'll get Capps settled down and be ready to go out tomorrow.

Your relief pitching sounds like mine. You put down that Bay had 2 doubles. One in the triangle, and one to right. Was one of those a triple, I'm guessing?

T-Plush is happy to help the team with a pinch hit. Wilson is happy that he was able to score a run when he got on base, plus an RBI.

Yes, one was a triple, I fixed that. My relief pitching isn't that bad, it's just when I control Capps. He was fine during a simulated game, and Martes was able to go two scoreless innings when I used him. I just hope this thing with Capps doesn't continue or else I'll need a new closer... Also, after I finish my fifth game, I'll reveal what the 'twist' is. But it does not involve bacon.

As amazing as Duffy's 74 MPH fastball is, I'll have to pass. :P

Pirates Face Elbow Troubles

The Pirates played their first home game today where they really struggled. Gorzelanny started the game and looked tired and fatigued from the start, but it seemed fine as he managed to get six quick outs. Meanwhile, the offense struck in the first inning once again. Nady hit a single to shallow right-center, allowing Bay and LaRoche to score and put the Pirates up 2-0. In the third inning, Gorzelanny's performance started to match his appearance. He gave up an RBI double to Alfonso Soriano, and then a single to Derrek Lee, causing Felix Pie and Soriano to cross the plate. After his next pitch, he screamed in agony due to pain in his right shoulder. Yates came in and finished the inning. The Pirates tied the game with a RBI double by Wilson, but went back down after a Soriano homer in the fifth. Halfway through the sixth, Yates also experienced elbow soreness and had to leave the game. Due to a depleated bullpen, the Pirates were forced to use fielders to pitch the eighth and ninth innings. Morgan gave up five runs and six hits in the eighth, but Duffy pitched a clean ninth, inducing three ground balls with his 70 MPH fastball. It is currently unknown how bad the injuries are, and if the pitchers will miss any time, as no information as currently been reported.

Bautista feels he did a decent job but thinks he is better than that. Capps is wondering why he didn't get to pitch.

Injury Update Plus Royals Trade

The MRI's for Gorzelanny and Yates came back negative, but the Pirates are taking the cautious route by placing them both on the 15-Day DL. "It's tough having two guys go down at the same time," said star outfielder Jason Bay, "but we've got to fight through for these next few weeks until we can get them back." In a related move, the Pirates have struck a deal with the Royals, sending over Paulino and Mientkiewicz for Brett Tomko, Joakim Soria, Miguel Olivo, and Alex Gordon. During a press coferernce, Jason Stark talked about how the trade would affect the team. "I believe this gives us the things we've been lacking. A swing-man in case of injuries, an effective, young reliever to put some pressure on Matt [Capps], a catcher to help fill the void of Ronny [Paulino], and a third baseman we can develop for the future."
