Hunter's Clutch HR Edges Rays in Game 2, Series Tied

DETROIT, MI (NAP) - When it looked like it might be dire times for the Tigers, Torii Hunter came through in a huge situation and lifted the Tigers to a Game 2 victory over Tampa Bay.

Both starting pitchers, in terms of runs given up, were spectacular, but one pitcher was better throughout the entire game, and that was Jeremy Hellickson. He pitched eight innings tonight, giving up 2 runs, but one earned, striking out 5 and walking 2. However, he was in a jam in the 4th inning, when with the bases loaded and nobody out, he induced a double-play ball off the bat of Nick Castellanos. However, the double play did not go to home plate, and it scored the first run of the game for Detroit, putting them up 1-0.

The score would stay the same until the 8th inning, when Jose Ortega, taking over for Javier Lopez after a 2-out walk to Evan Longoria, gave up a double to Wil Myers, and wild-pitched in Longoria to tie the game at 1. However, with 1 out in the bottom of the inning, Torii Hunter hit a long home run to left-center field off of Hellickson to give the Tigers the lead for good. In the top of the 9th, Joe Nathan did allow a couple of baserunners, but none of those scored, sealing a Tigers victory in Game 2.

For Game 3 in St. Pete, the Tigers will send Rick Porcello to the mound, and Tampa will call upon former Tiger Drew Smyly.

Zobrist's First Inning Slam Powers Tampa Bay Rout in Game 3

ST. PETERSBURG, FL (NAP) - The Tiger's bats struggled once again, while the Rays' flourished in a 9-2 stomping of Detroit tonight at Tropicana Field.

The start looked promising for the Tigers, though, when Victor Martinez hit a 2-run single in the 1st inning to score Torii Hunter and Miguel Cabrera, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead, but Drew Smyly would settle in nicely after that, pitching six shutout innings after that point.

The Rays took the lead for good in the bottom of the 1st, when Ben Zobrist hit a line drive Grand Slam to center field, just over the head of Ezequiel Carrera, making the Tampa lead 4-2. The sixth would be the inning that put the dagger in the hearts of the Tigers, when the Rays played station-to-station baseball to score 5 runs in the inning, most with no outs, and off of 3 Tigers pitchers.

"It was not our best performance out there on both ends," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus quipped after the game, "we just need to go back out there tomorrow, put it behind us, and tie the series up again."

For Game 4, the Tigers will send Rick Porcello to the mound, while the Rays will counter with Jake Odorizzi. Alex Cobb was scheduled to start, but is scratched with flu-like symptoms.

Tigers Win Extra-Inning Thriller to Tie Series

ST. PETERSBURG, FL (NAP) - It was a very stressful game for both teams, each having their own scoring opportunities at different points, but it was the Tigers who prevailed in a 13 inning classic at Tropicana Field, winning by the score of 6-5.

The teams were hitless and scoreless until the 3rd inning, when CF Don Kelly, starting for Ezequiel Carrera, singled with one out, putting runners on first and second (Hernan Perez was hit by a pitch to start the inning). After Torii Hunter grounded into a double play, Miguel Cabrera parked Jake Odorizzi's first pitch into the left field stands to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

The Rays didn't get their first hit until the 4th inning, when Austin Jackson singled with one out. He then stole second and took third on the throwing error by Alex Avila, and was brought in via a wild pitch by Rick Porcello. The score would remain the same until the 6th inning, when Jackson took the first pitch by Porcello just inside the foul pole in left field to tie the game. They would get one more run in the inning with a Matt Joyce RBI single, scoring Evan Longoria. After a 1-2-3 inning from Jake Odorizzi in the top of the 7th, the Rays would add one more run with Ryan Hanigan hitting an RBI single to increase the lead to 4-2.

In the top of the 8th inning with one out, Hernan Perez and Don Kelly hit back-to-back singles, placing runners on the corners. Kelly would be replaced at first base by speedster Rajai Davis, and the move would pay dividends. Torii Hunter, on a 3-2 pitch, doubled down the right field line, scoring both Perez and Davis, the clutch hit tying the game at 4 apiece.

In the period between the 8th and the 13th, Joe Nathan pitched 3 highly effective innings in relief, striking out 5 innings and only giving up a hit and a walk. In the top of the 13th, Alex Avila, who had been struggling all game, hit an RBI single with 2 outs on a 2-2 pitch, scoring Hunter and Cabrera, giving the Tigers another 2-run lead, 6-4.

The bottom of the inning turned out to be a little dicey for the Tigers. Jose Ortega, who got the last out of the 12th, started the inning off by promptly walking the first two batters, Wil Myers and Matt Joyce. That signaled the end of the day for him, and the Tigers brought in Evan Reed to quell the uprising. He got the first out on a sac bunt by Ben Zobrist, and then made a risky decision by intentionally walking Mike Carp to load the bases for Ryan Hanigan. On a close 3-2 pitch, Hanigan walked to bring in the 5th run of the game for Tampa, and the Tropicana faithful were thinking there was a chance to win this game from the clutches of defeat. With the infield in, Kevin Kiermaier grounded into a fielder's choice to the second baseman Perez, who got the out at home plate, but Avila couldn't double up Kiermaier, bringing up Hak-Ju Lee to potentially end the game. On a 3-2 pitch, Reed struck him out with a high fastball to end the tense 13th inning, and giving the Tigers the 4th game of the series.

For Game 5, the Tigers will send Justin Verlander to the bump, while the Rays will put Matt Moore on the rubber.

Two Home Runs, Dominant Verlander Sends Tampa to the Brink

ST. PETERSBURG, FL (NAP) - Justin Verlander hadn't been himself yet this postseason. A tough-luck loss in Game 1, and a 5-run start in the ALDS soured the rotation a little bit the first couple rounds.

Not anymore.

Verlander was in control tonight in St. Pete, cruising to a 5-hit shutout, striking out 8 Rays hitters and walking one en route to a 5-0 victory in Game 5 of the ALCS, sending the series back to Detroit to potentially clinch the AL pennant. No Rays hitter in the game advanced past second base the entire game.

Verlander had a little bit of help on the offensive side as well, riding a 3rd inning 2-run homer by Victor Martinez off of starter Matt Moore, and a 5th inning 3-run homer by rookie Devon Travis off of Josh Lueke to seal the victory.

"It's good to head back home knowing that one win can send you to the World Series," manager Brad Ausmus said after the game, "hopefully we'll have the home field advantage and clinch the pennant."

For Game 6 in Detroit, the Tigers will send Anibal Sanchez to the hill, while the Rays will counter with Alex Cobb. Cobb has been day-to-day the entire series with flu-like symptoms, but in his post-game interview, he said, "I should be ready to go for Game 6. Feeling a lot better than I did a few days ago, so, yeah, I'll be alright."

Clutch Hits Send Tigers to World Series

DETROIT, MI (NAP) - Alex Avila has arguably been the best batter for the Tigers this postseason. After only batting in the .230 range in the regular season, he's slashing .361/.500/.417 this postseason with 10 walks in 11 games.

Who woulda thunk it?

When people look back at this series, and this postseason, he won't be remembered for taking a lot of walks in both series, he'll be known for some of the big hits in the postseason, such as his game-tying 2-run double in the 6th inning in tonight's 3-2 win over the Rays to take the AL pennant. "I just got a good pitch to hit on 2-2 there," Avila said after the game, "I thought it was gonna be caught, but I guess my luck this series helped that get down the line in right for the double."

The game's scoring didn't happen until the 5th, when Evan Longoria, who has had a bit of a pesky series, hit a 2-1 pitch just past Tyler Collins in left field, who chased it down to the wall for a two-run double. It gave the Rays the 2-0 lead off starter Anibal Sanchez. Sanchez would settle in after that, throwing two more shutout innings after the double.

After Avila's 2-run double to score Miguel Cabrera and Torii Hunter, Tyler Collins hit a double to right field to score Avila to give the Tigers the 3-2 lead.

The game went quiet until the top of the 9th, when Joe Nathan came in to pitch. The fans at Comerica were on their feet, knowing the Tigers were just a few outs away from going to the World Series for the second time in the past 3 years. After Ryan Hanigan struck out on 3 pitches, Nathan walked the center fielder Kiermaier. He threw over a couple of times, and both times, they were extremely close, but safe. "I knew he was a threat to steal, so that's why I threw over a couple times. He was a little ancy over there tonight, that's for sure." He then proceeded to strike out Hak-Ju Lee on 4 pitches.

Then came the matchup everyone was waiting for - Austin Jackson, the former Tiger, trying to extend the game and series for the Rays. And then a stunning twist came via the direction of the first base umpire.

"OUT!"

In the most surprising end to a postseason game this side of Kolten Wong, Kiermaier was picked off of first as soon as Jackson stepped into the box, ending the game and series, giving the Tigers the AL championship.

"We knew he was a threat to steal, and the runner has gotten picked off a few times already this year," Brad Ausmus stated after the game, "we knew he had a chance to get him, so good thing Nathan threw over there."

The Tigers don't know yet who they will face in the World Series, but the rest of that series should be an entertaining one to follow.

NOTES:
-The Tigers announced some new coaches for their minor league teams. First, for AA Erie, they overhauled the staff, starting with their new manager, Brian Harper. He is known to be outstanding at handling his players, and should be a fine addition to their staff. The new pitching coach is Javier Flores, who is, on paper, a solid choice in terms of handling players and teaching pitching, and the new hitting coach is Thad Bosley, who is good at teaching hitting, and decent at handling players. They also announced that the new Manager for their Lakeland Rookie League team will be former Phillies catcher Chris Coste, who made his MLB debut at the age of 33 with the Phillies, and had a solid 4 years for the Phillies and Astros before retiring in 2011.

-The Tigers will not be able to activate 2B Ian Kinsler for another 4 days, due to the DL stint, therefore keeping him off the World Series roster for now.

Scherzer's 12 Ks Lead Tigers to Game 1 Victory

DETROIT, MI (NAP) - Have a day, Max Scherzer.

The potential free agent starting pitcher was on point for Detroit today in Game 1 of the World Series, showcasing his abilities with a 12-strikeout performance against a potent Milwaukee Brewers lineup. The only blemishes on the day for him were an RBI groundout by Ryan Braun in the 1st, and a solo shot (3) by John Mayberry, Jr. in the 4th.

"I had all my pitches working for me tonight, and I'm glad the offense picked me up with their performance," Scherzer said in his post-game press conference.

The Tigers offense did back him up, the main scoring inning being a 3-run sixth inning, where Nick Castellanos brought in a run, and Devon Travis' reach on an error by Carlos Gomez, bringing in 2. Ezequiel Carrera and Stephen Drew also had RBIs.

In Game 2, the Tigers will send Justin Verlander to the mound, while the Brewers will have Yovani Gallardo on the bump. Gallardo has been struggling this postseason, giving up 13 runs in his 4 starts so far (0-2 record).

Tigers Victorious in Pitcher's Duel

DETROIT, MI (NAP) - There weren't too many big hits to be found in tonight's World Series contest, but the ones that mattered came when the Tigers needed it most - and now they head to Milwaukee up 2-0 in their World Series matchup with the Brewers.

Both pitchers were stellar tonight, one having been dominant the majority of the postseason, the other possibly finding his stride. That would be Justin Verlander and Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo, respectively. Verlander pitched 6 solid innings, giving up only a 6th inning solo shot to Brewers 1B Hunter Morris (4). Gallardo pitched 6.1 innings, but gave up 2 runs, earning a tough luck loss, his third of the postseason.

Victor Martinez gave the Tigers their first run of the game in the 3rd inning, when he singled to right field to bring in Ezequiel Carrera. After the Morris homer in the 6th, the Tigers got the lead right back in the bottom half of the inning, when Tyler Collins rifled a single to left field, just past both Aramis Ramirez and Jean Segura, to give the Tigers the lead for good.

It did get a bit dicey again in the 9th, when John Mayberry Jr. advanced to third base with 2 outs, but Joe Nathan got Carlos Gomez to fly out to deep center to end the game, and give the Tigers a commanding 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

For Game 3 in Milwaukee, the Tigers call upon Anibal Sanchez to put the Brew Crew on the ropes, while Milwaukee counters with Wily Peralta. Both starters have been outstanding this postseason, both having ERAs under 2.8.

Herrera Walk-Off Homer Downs Tigers in Game 3

MILWAUKEE, WI (NAP) - Elian Herrera hit a game-winning home run off Joe Nathan in the 11th inning for the Brewers to send them home victorious over the Tigers in Game 3 of the World Series.

The Tigers looked poised to go to the back-end of their bullpen after a wild pitch scored Rajai Davis in the 7th inning, but a Ryan Braun double in the bottom half of that inning tied the game, and eventually went to extra innings. The Tigers were led by their rookies, especially Devon Travis, who went 3 for 5 with his second homer of the postseason in the 2nd inning to put the Tigers up 2-0. Nick Castellanos also hit a home run, this one in the 4th inning to put the Tigers up 3-2.

But the Brewers had clutch homers of their own. Along with Herrera's homer in the 11th, Jonathan Lucroy hit a bomb to left-center in the 6th inning to tie the game up at 3, his 3rd of the postseason.

Anibal Sanchez wasn't bad for the Tigers, going 6.2 innings, giving up 4 runs and striking out 7. Wily Peralta went 7 complete for the Brewers, giving up 4 runs on 8 hits, striking out and walking 2 apiece.

For Game 4, the Tigers will send Rick Porcello to the mound, while the Brewers will call upon Marco Estrada.

V-Mart's PH Grand Slam Fuels Mid-Inning Tigers Comeback

MILWAUKEE, WI (NAP) - Oh, how one swing of the bat can change the complexion of a game.

That's exactly what Victor Martinez did in the 6th inning of tonight's World Series matchup at Miller Park. He came in as a pinch-hitter for the pitcher, Rick Porcello, who was decent enough today to earn the victory. Down 3-0, with new pitcher Brandon Kintzler on the mound protecting a bases-loaded, 2 out situation, he mashed the 3rd pitch he threw over the center field wall out of the reach of Carlos Gomez, giving the Tigers a much needed boost in offense. They would never look back, winning Game 4 5-3, and setting themselves up to win the World Series tomorrow night.

Miguel Cabrera would add a solo shot in the 7th to solidify the lead. Al Alburquerque and Joba Chamberlain pitched a clean 8th and 9th, respectively.

For the Brewers, their scoring came via Hunter Morris' 2-run double in the first, and Ryan Braun's solo homer in the 3rd.

For the potential champagne dowsing Game 5 tomorrow, the Tigers will send Max Scherzer, while the Brewers go with Matt Garza.

Tigers Lose, But Head Back To Detroit To Try and Clinch Series

MILWAUKEE, WI (NAP) - The Tigers had a clunker game tonight, losing Game 5 of the World Series to Milwaukee, 6-2.

Milwaukee pulled away in the 8th after the Tigers scored 2 runs in their half of the inning off another Victor Martinez pinch-hit HR (4) and Miguel Cabrera RBI single. The Brewers got a 2-run triple from Carlos Gomez, who later scored on a wild pitch by Phil Coke. The Brewers' other offense came via the form of back-to-back HRs by Ryan Braun and Hunter Morris, and Scooter Gennett scoring on a double play off the bat of Aramis Ramirez.

The Tigers head back to Detroit to try to clinch, and they'll have Justin Verlander taking the mound for them. The Brewers will counter with Yovani Gallardo.
