Who else on the roster can play first? Or would someone like Grossman, Scott [I think he can play 1B], or Dean have to be called up? Is having McBride play first for a little while and making Jimenez catch every game during that stretch a viable option?

Also, what are the little (RIP)s next to some of the user players for?

In the games I've simmed since the one I wrote about, I mainly used McBride, but I have also tested out Murphy at first since he seems to be breaking out of his slump after a few days off. I'd still expect some roster changes soon, at least before the end of the month.

The RIP's are meant to recognize the players made by the brave forum members that were taken from us far too soon.

White Sox Acquire Pena, Doumit From Blue Jays
by Steve Adams, MLB Trade Rumors
Sunday, May 17, 2016

Image

The White Sox have acquired infielders Ramiro Pena and Ryan Doumit from the Blue Jays in exchange for minor league pitchers Chad Gomez and Ryan Verdugo, the teams announced today.

With rumors abound regarding Doumit's fate with the Blue Jays, it was no surprise to see the struggling first baseman get a new start elsewhere. The inclusion of Pena, while having some merit, was a bit of a surprise, as despite his struggles in 2016, he still has decent upside when you take his above-average 2015 season into account. Doumit, 34, had been a decent bat for most of his relatively long career before coming to Toronto on an affordable 1-year deal. What looked to be a good bargain turned sour quickly, as he posted a paltry .559 OPS in 112 plate appearances for the Jays, failing to hit a home run in any of them. The result? A .226 slugging percentage and a .010 ISO. In spite of the poor numbers, the White Sox will still take a chance on the veteran switch-hitter, due mainly to the fact that their star first baseman Jose Abreu is on the DL with a knee injury. It should be noted that Doumit has managed a decent .330 on-base percentage so far, and his 16 walks were second on the Blue Jays as of yesterday's games.

Pena, 30, is the biggest piece in this deal. After a decent 2014 and an impressive 2015, the second baseman has also stumbled out of the gate to start 2016. Pena hit .226 with a .610 OPS in 106 at-bats to start the year, but his biggest struggles this year have come where his biggest strength was at: his fielding. Pena has committed 3 errors so far en route to a .969 fielding percentage, 2nd worst in the AL among qualified second basemen.

Pena was one of the best bargains of the 2015 season, posting a WAR above 4 while being signed to a very affordable deal himself. He also seemed to establish himself as a fan favorite, which is why the trade seems to be so surprising, and was likely part of the reason as to why the Jays refused to trade him even though his value was much higher than what it is at currently. With the trade, it seems as though the Jays are officially determining that 2015 was a fluke for the Mexican infielder. The White Sox, however, see a player with a decent track record and upside, with an added bonus of being very versatile. The South Siders expect Pena to play third base for now, as young third baseman Matt Davidson is also on the DL for them with a broken throwing hand. Once Davidson comes back, Pena will most likely be competing with Gordon Beckham for the second base job.

Gomez, 20, is an interesting story. He was born in Guam, a United States territory in the region of Oceania, but moved to Hawaii for high school. He had not started playing baseball until freshman year, and had no idea about most of the rules or what position he would be good at. His coaches took a chance on him, and tested him out at various positions. As it turns out, he couldn't hit whatsoever, but he threw very hard. With that in mind, they decided to test him out at pitcher, which would work out better than they could ever hope for. He ended up dominating batters in high schools all across Hawaii, and scouts started to take notice. The White Sox liked him enough to take him in the 3rd round of the 2014 draft, and while he struggled a bit in 2015, he seems to have made some significant improvements this year. Gomez's main pitch is his cut fastball, which he uses almost all the time. He throws it around 91-93 mph and is described as plus-plus by every scout that has seen him pitch. He has also been working on incorporating a curveball and a changeup more into his outings, perhaps the reason for his difficulties last year. While his limited arsenal may hold him to a relief role, he does have the body of a starting pitcher, towering at 6'5" and 234 pounds. Overall, Gomez has immense raw talent, but is just a bit of a ways away from harnessing it.

Verdugo, 28, is now a part of his 4th organization in his career after serving time in the White Sox, Royals, and Giants organizations. The lefty has pitched very well at Double-A Birmingham this year, posting a 2.67 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 27 innings. Verdugo is capable of both starting and relieving, and has been capable of getting both lefties and righties out so far this season.

Following the trade, the Jays have called up first baseman Pete Grossman and middle infielder Michael Scott to take Doumit and Pena's spots on the 25-man roster. Grossman has shown immense power at Triple-A Buffalo, hitting 10 home runs in 132 at-bats for the Bisons. The last time Grossman was up on the Jays roster, he impressed, picking up 9 hits, including his first career homer, in 28 at-bats (.321 AVG). Scott, 24, has had an up-and-down start to his career. After doing well as a bench bat in 2014, he failed to replicate that success last year, resulting in a midseason demotion to Buffalo. He was called back up to the Jays in September and did decent, but found himself back in Buffalo after a poor spring showing. He has been tearing the cover off the ball so far for the Triple-A club to the tune of an .886 OPS, so again, he has been brought up to the big club. Hopefully, for his sake, he is there to stay this time.

Boston's Young Talents Vital in Victory
by Gregor Chisholm, MLB.com

BOSTON - Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts hits a go-ahead three-run home run.

A sold-out crowd in Fenway Park tonight witnessed their Red Sox defeat the Blue Jays 7-3.

As we have seen quite a few times this season, the Jays took off to an early lead. Brett Lawrie led off the game with a triple off the Green Monster, and Troy Tulowitzki drove him in later on in the inning with an RBI single. In the 3rd, Lawrie hit an RBI double down the first base line, scoring second baseman Michael Scott, who was playing his first MLB game this season.

With the two runs given up in the first three innings, it looked like struggling Red Sox starter Jon Lester would post yet another clunker of a start. Lester's ERA going into tonight's game was in the high 6's. However, Lester turned his outing around, throwing four more innings and allowing only one more run en route to a much-needed quality start. Overall, Lester went 7 innings, giving up 8 hits, 3 runs (all earned), walking 2 batters, and striking out 4.

Even though they gave up the same amount of runs, Lester's outing was far less stressful than that of Jays starter Tyler Chatwood's. Chatwood needed exactly 100 pitches just to get through 5 innings of work. Like Lester, Chatwood also gave up 8 hits and struck out 4. However, he also walked one more batter than Lester did despite throwing 2 less innings. Chatwood has struggled with consistency so far this season, somewhat worrying for a pitcher entering the prime of his career.

All of the runs scored by the Red Sox tonight were driven in by homegrown players. CF Jackie Bradley Jr. tied the game up with a 2-run single in the 4th inning. In the 5th, designated hitter and RotY frontrunner Chase Nixon hit a solo homer to right field to give the Sox the lead, his 5th on the campaign. After the Jays tied the game up on a wild pitch in the next half-inning, shortstop Xander Bogaerts dealt the biggest blow of the game, hitting a 3-run jack to right field off Jays reliever Kyle Drabek. Here's what the young Aruban had to say about his clutch hit:

"I noticed the pitcher seemed to be stressed out up there," Bogaerts said, "so I mainly was going up to the plate looking to just get on base. Looking from the dugout, he was pretty wild tonight so I expected to either get walked or get hit. I was told to take pitches until I got a strike, so I took the first pitch ball. Then he threw me a fastball right down the middle the next pitch that I had to swing at. I wanted to hit something into the gap in right-center, but I was watching the ball and it just kept carrying and carrying until it went over the wall. It was a great moment for me and the team, hopefully we can continue to hit like this."

Sox catcher Dan Butler drove in an insurance run in the 7th with an RBI double. Butler has been quite the surprise for the team this season, finally seeing regular playing time for the club at age 29 and currently hitting .320 on the year after posting a 4-4 game tonight. In addition to driving in a run, Butler also scored on Bogaerts' homer.

Andrew Miller and Junichi Tazawa finished off the game for the Red Sox, with Miller throwing 1.2 scoreless innings and Tazawa getting the final out of the game by striking out Jays CF Mackenzie Matthews.

Despite the loss, Jays bats still did well. Only 1 starter (Murphy) failed to reach base tonight, and 2 players (Lawrie, Scott) posted three-hit games. Lawrie's game was especially notable as he was only a home run away from completing a cycle.

The loss is the second in a row for the Blue Jays. They travel to Detroit for their series against the 4th-place Tigers hoping to end the losing streak at two games. The Jays had faced the Tigers earlier this month in a 4-game series at the Rogers Centre, where they won 3 of those games. Moses Adler has a tough task ahead of him as he takes on last year's Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander tomorrow in the opening game of the series.

Hughes, Twins Edge Jays In Pitchers' Duel
by Gregor Chisholm, MLB.com
Friday, May 29, 2016

Image
TORONTO - Twins outfielder Byron Buxton talks to the press after his big game.

The Blue Jays take a tough loss at the hands of the Twins, losing 2-1 to the Minnesota ballclub.

Veteran right-hander Phil Hughes continued his strong run of performances into tonight's game, tossing 8 innings of 1-run ball, striking out 8 and earning his 5th win on the year. Hughes' ERA subsequently lowered to a pristine 2.48. The sole run Hughes gave up came via a sacrifice fly by Troy Tulowitzki, which only happened as a result of third baseman Brett Lawrie stealing 2nd and 3rd base in that at-bat. The steals were Lawrie's 4th and 5th on the year. The only real downside to Hughes' start, other than the run he gave up, was the fact that he needed nearly 140 pitches to get through it. While his determination and stamina are admirable, throwing that many pitches is definitely risky. As a result, Hughes will probably need to receive a couple more days' rest than he is accustomed to.

Jays starter Marcus Stroman was the hard-luck loser in this one. The flamethrower went 6 innings while allowing only 2 runs, both RBI singles. Designated hitter Chris Colabello drove in CF Byron Buxton to give the Twins their first run in the top of the 1st, and third baseman Miguel Sano drove in what was ultimately the deciding run in the 5th, scoring shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera. Stroman struck out 6 batters in those 6 innings, and while he did get a quality start and bring his ERA down under the 5 mark, you can bet he will be disappointed his team couldn't get the win for him.

The big hitter of tonight's game was leadoff man and center fielder Byron Buxton. The former top prospect and 2015 AL runner-up for Rookie of the Year was originally mired in a very bad slump prior to the game, coming in with a .176 batting average. However, it seems he might be on his way of crawling out, as he reached base in all 5 of his plate appearances, and also picked up 4 hits and stole his 14th base on the year. Buxton was also a home run away from finishing off the cycle.

"I had a talk with our hitting coach, and I changed up my approach a little bit before the game tonight," Buxton said postgame. "I knew, the team knew, everyone knew I was struggling, so I decided something needed to change. I felt a lot more comfortable at the plate tonight than I have in a while, and it was pretty obvious. To go 4-4 against a guy with great stuff like Stroman, it's a pretty great feeling. Hopefully this is the kickstart I need to get back on track and become a big contributor to the team again."

Colabello and Sano, the two Twins who picked up RBIs, also had multiple hits in tonight's game. Colabello had three overall, including a double, and Sano had two. For the Jays, Lawrie picked up 3 hits and stole two bases, and left fielder Hayden Goldson picked up two hits of his own.

Twins closer Glen Perkins threw a scoreless 9th inning to pick up his 17th save of the season. The hard-throwing lefty was previously tied with Jays closer Lamont Cates and Angels closer Ernesto Frieri for the AL lead in the save category, but has now taken sole ownership of the #1 spot after tonight. Perkins is 2nd in the MLB in saves behind Francisco Rodriguez of the Pirates, who already has 21 on the year. While it is still quite early, it would be quite the story if Rodriguez could possess the single-season save records in both the AL and NL.

Thankfully for the Blue Jays, the first-place Rays also lost tonight, meaning Toronto will still remain 3 games behind Tampa Bay. This is pretty much the only silver lining in what has been a poor day for the Jays.

Monthly Report - May
by Richard Griffin, Toronto Star
Monday, June 1, 2016

We head into the midseason now, with the amateur draft coming up quite soon. Let's see how things have gone through 2 months of play:

Standings

AL East
1. Rays (31-19)
2. Blue Jays (29-23, 3 GB)
2. Red Sox (26-25, 5.5 GB)
4. Yankees (24-27, 7.5 GB)
5. Orioles (22-28, 9 GB)

AL Central
1. Twins (24-26)
2. Royals (23-27, 1 GB)
3. Indians (22-27, 1.5 GB)
4. Tigers (22-28, 2 GB)
5. White Sox (15-34, 8.5 GB)

AL West
1. Rangers (30-21)
2. Astros (29-22, 1 GB)
3. Mariners (25-25, 4.5 GB)
4. A's (23-27, 6.5 GB)
5. Angels (22-28, 7.5 GB)

NL East
1. Mets (31-19)
2. Nationals (27-23, 4 GB)
3. Braves (26-24, 5 GB)
4. Phillies (25-25, 6 GB)
5. Marlins (24-26, 7 GB)

NL Central
1. Pirates (32-18)
2. Reds (28-23, 4.5 GB)
3. Cardinals (25-25, 7 GB)
4. Cubs (22-27, 9.5 GB)
5. Brewers (21-29, 11 GB)

NL West
1. Dodgers (29-21)
2. Diamondbacks (26-22, 2 GB)
3. Rockies (24-25, 4.5 GB)
4. Giants (23-28, 6.5 GB)
5. Padres (21-29, 8 GB)

So far, the two most recent World Series winners (A's, Cardinals) have had relatively poor starts to their seasons. And what is happening in the AL Central? The last-place teams in both the AL East and West would only be 2 games back had they been in the Central instead. This is in stark contrast to the NL East, where every team besides the Marlins is .500 or over.

The Blue Jays have kept their #2 spot in the AL East. Let's take a look at the guys' individual performances:

Pitchers
Dean Stradley (64 IP, 3-3, 4.36 ERA, 71 K, 5 QS)
Danny Hopkins (66.1 IP, 3-4, 4.34 ERA, 74 K, 5 QS)
Tyler Chatwood (60.1 IP, 3-4, 4.62 ERA, 63 K, 4 QS)
Moses Adler (57.1 IP, 4-3, 3.30 ERA, 30 K, 5 QS)
Marcus Stroman (56.1 IP, 2-2, 4.95 ERA, 71 K, 4 QS)
Kyle Drabek (17 IP, 4-2, 4.76 ERA, 15 K)
Austin Langer (21.1 IP, 0-0, 1.27 ERA, 19 K, 2 SV)
Hunter Strickland (29 IP, 3-2, 2.48 ERA, 34 K)
Yoshimitsu Tsuchii (24 IP, 2-2, 3.00 ERA, 12 K)
Leo Vizcaino (11 IP, 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 10 K) (promoted 5/13)
John Stilson (13.2 IP, 2-0, 4.61 ERA, 16 K)
Lamont Cates (17 IP, 0-0, 2.65 ERA, 17 K, 17 SV)

Catchers
Matt McBride (.307 (39/127) /.403/.488, 5 HR, 20 RBI)
A.J. Jimenez (.256 (21/82) /.319/.305, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 8 SB)

Infielders
Pete Grossman (.273 (15/55) /.299/.455, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 2 SB) (promoted 5/17)
Kent Murphy (.247 (36/146) /.284/.452, 6 HR, 17 RBI, 3 SB)
Ryan Goins (.226 (12/53) /.339/.396, 2 HR, 6 RBI)
Brett Lawrie (.270 (51/189) /.333/.407, 3 HR, 26 RBI, 5 SB)
Michael Scott (.500 (3/6) /.500/.500, 0 HR, 0 RBI) (promoted 5/17)
Troy Tulowitzki (.302 (48/159) /.377/.623, 13 HR, 34 RBI, 4 SB)

Outfielders
Hayden Goldson (.245 (47/192) /.303/.484, 9 HR, 28 RBI, 5 SB)
Damon Allred (.270 (31/115) /.311/.583, 11 HR, 22 RBI, 3 SB) (promoted 4/29)
Anthony Gose (.251 (42/167) /.313/.425, 4 HR, 20 RBI, 13 SB)
Mackenzie Matthews (.300 (24/80) /.371/.450, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 7 SB)
Jose Bautista (.272 (46/169) /.344/.438, 6 HR, 25 RBI, 3 SB)

The struggles have shifted from the bullpen to the rotation for the Jays, as only 1 starting pitcher has an ERA below 4. Normally the strongest part of the team, it is strange how nearly every starter has managed to get cold at the exact same time.

There have been some impressive turnarounds for some of the Blue Jays hitters, most notably infielders Brett Lawrie and Kent Murphy and outfielders Anthony Gose and Damon Allred. Mackenzie Matthews has also been a nice surprise at the plate, and has been rewarded with some more playing time as a result. His defensive skills were never doubted, but his offense is why he has been shifted between Buffalo and Toronto. Now, he seems to have made noticeable improvements and has made the most of his opportunities.

Troy Tulowitzki has been on fire, and should easily make yet another all-star team. While it is too early for MVP discussion, there has definitely been talk of Tulo being in the running to receive the prestigious award. All he needs to do is stay healthy, which has been easier said than done for him. However, Toronto has been hailed as having one of the top training and medical staffs in the majors, so if any organization can help him stay healthy, it's the Blue Jays.

Now for the notable minor leaguers:

AAA [Buffalo Bisons (5th, 23-28, 7 GB)]
C John Scott (.266 (21/79) /.310/.468, 4 HR, 14 RBI) (injured 5/1, recovered 5/28)
3B Lonnie Bradshaw (.222 (34/153) /.279/.373, 6 HR, 22 RBI, 2 SB)
CF Brandon Barnes (.455 (5/11) /.455/1.091, 2 HR, 4 RBI) (recovered, demoted to AAA 5/24)
RF Todd Rosado (.279 (38/136) /.376/.397, 3 HR, 15 RBI)
SP Darby Clancy (48.2 IP, 1-3, 5.36 ERA, 35 K)
SP/RP Jake Jones (7 IP, 0-0, 5.14 ERA, 6 K) (injured 5/24)
RP James Bennett (25 IP, 0-3, 4.68 ERA, 31 K, 3 SV)
RP Joel Rockwell (21.2 IP, 0-2, 6.23 ERA, 26 K) (injured 5/20)

AA [New Hampshire Fisher Cats (T-1st, 31-20)]
1B Matt Dean (.313 (56/179) /.382/.458, 5 HR, 27 RBI)
3B Mitch Nay (.316 (55/174) /.414/.448, 5 HR, 24 RBI, 4 SB)
CF Aatu Selin (.263 (5/19) /.286/.368, 0 HR, 3 RBI) (demoted to AA 5/25)
RF Anatole Hazewood (.298 (28/94) /.396/.351, 1 HR, 12 RBI, 5 SB) (promoted to AA 5/1)
SP/RP Robert Tomlinson (27.1 IP, 1-2, 5.60 ERA, 15 K)
SP Joseph Gregerson (47.1 IP, 4-2, 2.47 ERA, 32 K)
CL Michael Lorenzen (16 IP, 1-0, 2.81 ERA, 17 K, 8 SV)

That's it for May, come back when June ends!

Blue Jays Draft Results
by Richard Griffin, Toronto Star
Friday, June 5, 2016

The 2016 MLB Draft is now over! Let's see the picks our Blue Jays made:

Round 1: C Buford Caudill, 21 years old
Round 2: SS Eric Bradley, 18 years old, L/R, 5'11"/189 (55 overall, C potential)
Round 3: 3B Michael Asuncion, 19 years old, R/R, 6'1''/174 (50 overall, B potential)
Round 4: RP Mario Almanzar, 21 years old, R/R, 6'0''/178 (55 overall, D potential)
Round 5: RP Michael Squires, 20 years old, R/R, 6'1"/205 (53 overall, D potential)
Round 6: 1B Will Gonzalez, 18 years old, R/R, 6'2"/182 (39 overall, B potential)

Players that have been crossed out are ones that will most likely not get a deal done with the team before the signing deadline.

If you want to do the draft thing that's been done the first two seasons, here are the instructions from page 7:

OKAY, so here's what I plan on doing.

If you want, I will customize certain draftees to be the way you choose them to be. If you want to do this, just use the same template found on page 1 of this log, and of the 5 (6 now) players signed, pick the one you want me to edit.

The only things I refuse to edit are ages and ratings (I also can't manually edit potential in this version), so please omit those from the template. Everything else is fair game.

This is first-come, first-serve, and even if you already have 2 players made, you can still get in on this. I would prefer that people who haven't made any players pick before anyone else, but you are free to do what you want.

If you don't like the draftees or the guy you really wanted has been taken, then there's always next season. Luckily, I'm simming most of these games, so next season will be here before you know it.

The deadline for this is the end of the year, so there should be plenty of time. Please remember that the draftees will not be playing until next season, so please be patient.

Sorry if my explanation is too confusing. If anyone still has questions, please ask.

Only 1 guy made a player last season, so pretty much everyone is eligible to participate in this. However, I will slightly tweak the format. Instead of a pure first-come-first-serve format like in the previous two seasons, if there is a person who has yet to make a player, then they will automatically get the player they called even if someone who has already made a player has called dibs first. I'm pretty sure everyone who follows this log already has a player made, so this probably won't be an issue in all likelihood. Hopefully I've explained this well enough.

I refuse to settle for B potential so I will wait until next season.

Hopefully there's more A potential position players next season. There was barely any this year and last.

No need to ask, just use the template on page 1 and finish the player as quick as you can. You can even change his position if you don't like him at catcher.
