2010 NLCS Game 1: High-Energy Opener
Game 1 of the highly-anticipated NLCS rematch did not disappoint whatsoever, with a pitching battle between Jake Peavy and John Maine. Both teams recorded several hits in the early innings, but both pitchers worked their way through jams with stunning poise. The most significant of these moments came in the 6th when John Maine faced a bases-loaded jam. Yet, he stayed calm and induced a ground-out from Curtis Granderson to the pitcher. He then forced Jack Cust to pop out, and finally got Adrian Gonzalez to ground out to third. However, this high did not last very long, as Game 1 hero Jason Blackburn homered to left in the 7th. This was the spark San Diego needed, and they added 2 key runs in the 8th via an Adrian Gonzalez single. Joba Chamberlain allowed a homer to Carlos Beltran, but he quickly recovered and secured a hard-fought victory.

2010 NLCS Game 2: Verlander Shines, Steals Homefield
Tonight was a disaster for the top-seeded Padres in arguably a game that was just as bad as one you would see in 2008. In sum, the Padres finished with 7 hits, but all of them were of weak quality. Justin Verlander, a promising young pitcher, had a rough regular season, but that meant nothing tonight. He struck out five batters, which is actually high for a team that makes quick and frequent contact. New York's only run off John Lackey came on a terrible miscue from Jack Cust, who dove in a terrible situation and allowed the game's only run to score. The Padres made a false rally, loading the bases in the ninth, but Verlander did not lose his composure. He struck out Khalil Greene on three pitchers, and the Mets evened the series. The pressure is now, for the first time in a while, on the Padres to take a game on the road.

2010 NLCS Game 3: Trouble Brewing
The Padres are now behind in the National League Championship Series and are on the verge of absolute free-fall. The first bad omen came in the first inning when Jack Cust hit a fly ball to deep left. It appeared to be destined to carry over the fence, but Adam Dunn, who is not known for his defense, lept onto the wall and made a spectacular catch. From this moment, San Diego seemed doomed. Indeed, New York scored two runs in three innings, both on RBI hits from catcher Brian Schneider. Adrian Gonzalez tried to bring his team back with a solo home run, but Mike Pelfrey was too dominant tonight. Pelfrey finished with a complete game, embarrassing Friar hitters en route to New York's win. This series is eerily similar to last season's World Series, and the Padres now have to face Johan Santana in Game 4.

2010 NLCS Game 4: Padres Stun Mets in All-Time Thriller
The San Diego Padres have evened up the series in one of the most exciting games in recent MLB history. At first, the game started like any other this series, with the Padres bats faltering and Adam Dunn homering in the fourth. Still, the piggyback of Greg Maddux and Francisco Jaramillo worked efficiently, as the pair allowed only three earned runs. When they trailed 1-0 in the 5th, San Diego's dormant offense suddenly found life. Jason Blackburn drove in the tying run, and Greg Maddux helped his own cause with an RBI double. Orlando Hudson then drove Maddux in, and the Padres led 3-1. In the next inning, Maddux ran into trouble and allowed a run, but Francisco Jaramillo prevented the game from falling apart. Jaramillo was lights-out until the ninth when Carlos Delgado drove a game-tying home run with 2 outs. It was a stunning turn of events that made it seem like San Diego's season was over. Then, the Mets put runners at first and third with nobody out in the 11th. All seemed lost for San Diego until Joba Chamberlain entered the game. Chamberlain struck out the first batter and then induced an inning-ending groundout in a heroic performance. With this, New York's momentum was gone, and Jason Blackburn secured San Diego's win with a single in the 12th. With such a dramatic turn of events, the Padres found new life.

2010 NLCS Game 5: Shocking.
Tonight may have been the end of the Padres season. Following it, the entire team looked the most dejected it has looked in years. Earlier, it seemed as if it was a guaranteed win, but this was not to be. Curtis Granderson looked like he was going to be the game's hero as he drove in 75% of the team's runs via 2 homers. Yet, the Mets refused to quit and pounced on Joba Chamberlain. With 1 down in the ninth, Brian Schneider crushed a 3-run home run to tie the game. Chamberlain's ERA is over 9 this postseason, and he has gone from hero to zero in the span of a night. In the 12th, the Padres got so desperate that they brought in Jake Peavy with a runner at third. Peavy was unprepared and allowed the winning single to Jose Reyes. The Padres are now a loss away from elimination.

2010 NLCS Game 6: Season Over
The San Diego Padres saw their 2010 season come to an abrupt end last night. It was a shocking defeat for a team that was widely predicted to win the World Series, and they now join the 2001 Seattle Mariners as 116-win teams to fall short in the postseason. The game started off well as Jack Cust and Adrian Gonzalez hit solo home runs in the second, but it quickly fell apart as Jake Peavy struggled in the second go-around of the Mets' batting order. Beltran, Chavez, and Schneider all homered off Peavy, which secured New York's upset victory. The Padres gave up another run in the eighth and lost the game 4-2. They left the field in a dejected state, shocked after an unexpected series loss.

2010 Playoff Recap: Cleveland Wins First Title in 62 Years
Surprisingly, Cleveland defeated the dominant New York Mets, who were on a red-hot postseason run. The Mets made quick work of a 116-win team, and yet they could not defeat an underdog Cleveland team. Scott Hatteberg, who will be portrayed by Chris Pratt in 2011's upcoming film Moneyball, won the MVP award. Hatteberg homered three times, delivering his team to a win in six games. As for the Padres, it softened the blow a bit, but in any case, they now share the dubious distinction of playoff chokers with the 2001 Seattle Mariners. Not much should change personnel-wise next season, which bodes well for a potential rebound back to an elite record. As for awards, John Lackey won the NL Cy Young, as was expected. Additionally, Joba Chamberlain won Reliever of the Year despite regression in September, and Jason Blackburn outplayed teammate Francisco Jaramillo for NL Rookie of the Year. Victor Martinez, Curtis Granderson, and Jack Cust all won Silver Sluggers, and V-Mart and Khalil Greene took home Gold Glove awards. Despite individual successes, the Padres will need to prove themselves as postseason winners in 2011.

2010-11 Offseason Recap
It was a standard offseason around the league, as there was not much league-changing activity. Last year, the Mets pushed all the chips to the middle of the table by signing Adam Dunn, but there were no similar moves from any team this year. As for the Padres, they will retain most of the record-tying 2010 roster, minus Brandon Webb. Letting Webb walk in free agency could be a questionable decision, but the team seems to be confident in its younger starting pitching. This may also have allowed them to sign John Lackey and Victor Martinez to significant multi-year extensions, and if the rotation falters, they still have the assets to trade for a better starter. They did make some moves, as they added backup catcher Miguel Olivo and utility infielder Maicer Izturis. The front office was criticized for giving players too high of a workload during the regular season, so they seem determined to prevent this in 2011. They also signed Callix Crabbe to a long-term extension, which signals a shift to a rotation-based system in the field. Regardless of strategy, the team neither won nor lost the offseason.

2011 Roster Preview: Minor Changes
San Diego is prepared to run it back for the 2011 season. The only major difference from the 2010 roster is the subtraction of Brandon Webb, who was replaced by rookie starter Hank Slowman. Aside from that, the batting order is the exact same as 2010s, down to each spot in the lineup. However, with bench additions, the team has greater depth, which allows them to rotate players more often. The Padres may not win 116 games again, but they should easily be contenders.

Opening Day 2011: Padres Nearly No-Hit
It was an embarrassing afternoon for the Padres, as they recorded just one hit- a Victor Martinez infield single. Had V-Mart not hustled, the Padres would have been embarrassed on Opening Night by a divisional rival. It was still an ugly defeat as they were outhit 15-1, despite Jake Peavy's start. Kelvin Escobar has excelled against San Diego in the past, mainly due to his ability to induce weak contact. This was on full display tonight as Escobar struck out just 2, yet he was in complete control of the game. The Padres have not won the opener in each of the last four seasons, which may suggest an inability to perform well against ace pitchers. This may become a storyline to follow, but San Diego has plenty of time to work through their issues.

April 30, 2011: Padres Lose Last Game of the Month, but Still a Promising Start
San Diego lost to the second-place Giants tonight, but there are still many positives to take from the start to the season. Francisco Jaramillo has been excellent, and he continued that trend tonight. Manager Bud Black may have left him in the game too long, though, as he allowed a 3-run homer to Bengie Molina in the seventh. San Diego's offense faltered, scoring just one run on a Khalil Greene RBI single. It's been a bit of an up-and-down month for San Diego's offense, so hopefully it will stabilize in the summer months. Overall, the Padres stand in first place with an 18-10 record, which is very similar to their position at this time last year.

April 2011 Recap: Padres in First
The Padres are once again off to a first-place start. Like last season, San Francisco trails by a few games, so the Padres will hope to widen the gap in the next few months. So far, San Diego's pitching staff has excelled once again, albeit a bit differently than the last few years. John Lackey, Jake Peavy, and Greg Maddux have each gotten off to somewhat poor starts. Lackey's start is the most surprising as he is coming off a Cy Young year. Despite these struggles, Zach Duke, Francisco Jaramillo, and Hank Slowman have each pitched well. Duke may be the leading Cy Young candidate, which would mark his second title in the last four years. On offense, the team has struggled a bit. They are last in the division in batting average by a considerable margin, although they lead the division in home runs. This shows that the club was built around power rather than contact or speed. Kevin Kouzmanoff, despite a rough end to 2010, is the team's leading hitter with a .350 batting average and a .398 on base percentage. Jack Cust is now in year four of absolute dominance with ten home runs and team-high 23 RBI. They may rely on Jason Blackburn and Adrian Gonzalez turning their seasons around, as each have OBPs near or below .300. If they can heat up, the lineup will seem much stronger. Until then, the Padres will have to rely on their strong starting pitching again in 2011.
